The owners of Fellini's and La Fonda plan to bring their third concept, The Greater Good BBQ to Atlanta's Westside later this year. The restaurant, to be located at 1021 Howell Mill Road, will open alongside La Fonda at the corner of 11th Street & Howell Mill Road.
Owners Clay Harper and Mike Nelson opened the first Great Good in Tucker in 2012, and followed that up with a location in Sandy Springs/North Buckhead in 2013. 2016 brought a third Greater Good, this time to a new development on Hosea L. Williams Drive in East Lake.
Prior occupants of the less than 2,000 square foot space in which Greater Good will open on Howell Mill Road include Vintage Frozen Custard, Ben's Brown Bag, Curly's Fried Chicken and LeRoy's Fried Chicken. LeRoy's was helmed by chef Julia LeRoy, and owned by Harper and Nelms. LeRoy had previously partnered with the Fellini's fellas on Three on The Tree, a chef-craft frozen yogurt shop that was a prior occupant of the Sandy Springs/North Buckhead Greater Good location. (We still dream of LeRoy's "Spiced Banana" flavor made with yogurt from now-defunct purveyor Atlanta Fresh.)
Greater Good's Westside opening comes at a time when there have been a number of new barbecue openings in the area, but also a number of closures.
Hottie Hawg’s Smokin’ BBQ closed its restaurant on Main Street about five miles from Greater Good, in early 2016. During the summer of 2016, Bone Lick BBQ closed its location on Huff Road about a mile from Greater Good.
In late 2016, DAS BBQ debuted in a converted Pizza Hut on Collier Road about 2.5 miles miles from Greater Good, followed by 4 Rivers Smokehouse last summer on Marietta Street about a half mile away.
Sources say that the new Greater Good is expected to open later this year but with no permits filed yet, it may be later than some hungry residents would prefer.
