Five Guys Burgers & Fries is looking to open in the former Del Taco restaurant in an outparcel of East Cobb Crossing shopping center on Roswell Road in East Cobb. East Cobb Newsfirst published plans for the restaurant which we'd heard was in the works last month, but for which we had not yet gotten confirmation. The Lorton, Virginia-based restaurant has submitted plans to Cobb County that will soon be reviewed by the Cobb Board of Commissioners. The burger chain is not looking to make any significant changes to the property, instead they are seeking permission to continue with certain signage and design variances previously granted to Del Taco.
The Del Taco restaurant opened in spring 2015 and quietly closed last July. Despite the closure in East Cobb, Del Taco continues to grow in metro Atlanta including a recently announced location in Tucker where they will open in place of a former Pollo Tropical restaurant.
For it's part, Five Guys, which already has about two dozen locations spread across metro Atlanta, has been ramping up expansion a few years after closing several locations. The chain closed units in Lindbergh, Chastain Park and Dunwoody, but has more recently closed select locations to relocate them to better, more visible, and accessible locations.
That said, a large portion of the former Del Taco drive-thru lane, will, according to plans, be converted in patio seating with at least three large tables, rather than being used for its intended purpose.
Despite other fast casual chains like Panera, Chipotle and Jason's Deli experimenting with drive-thrus at some of their restaurants, Five Guys seems intent on not adding the functionality.
