A new kind of business is coming to Decatur.  The Cereal Lab, an eatery that will offer cereal, milkshakes and ice cream bowls, among other desserts, has signed a lease for 335 West Ponce de Leon Avenue, Suite D.  The eatery takes the place of the onetime Verizon store adjacent to The Great Frame Up in the bottom of the 335 West Ponce condo building.

Entrepreneur Cynthia "Cyn" Hernandez started the business in 2018, but the Decatur outpost will be her first brick and mortar location.

The Cereal Lab has existed for the past few years primarily as a pop-up and mobile eatery with appearances at different events and festivals. In early April, The Cereal Lab was among the top 8 desserts (out of nearly 60 participants) at the Dessert Wars festival, billed as the "largest dessert festival in America."

In an effort to supplement her efforts to get her roughly 1,200 square foot brick & mortar open, Hernandez earlier this month launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of raising $15,000.  As of the morning of April 12, the campaign had raised $541 from nine backers.

Although not offering the same treats, the addition of The Cereal Lab should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood following the closures of the beloved The Yogurt Tap on Church Street at the end of 2016 and Steel City Pops, which closed its shop, also on Church Street, at the end of 2019.

Have you had desserts from The Cereal Lab?  If so, what was your favorite?  What is your favorite cereal?
