Value Village, a local thrift store that claims to be "A Treasurer Hunter's Paradise" and once had more than a dozen locations around metro Atlanta, will soon close three more stores leaving the group with just seven stores in operation.

The organization announced via Facebook in recent days that they are having a 50% off, later increased to 75%, sale at Value Village stores in Atlanta, Sugar Hill, and Douglasville.  Although not explicit in their post, we visited the stores to confirm that the sale is to clear the stores to close them permanently.

The stores that are closing are located at:

1899 Metropolitan Parkway in Atlanta

4450 Nelson Brogdon Boulevard in Sugar Hill

3150 Highway 5 in Douglasville

The three closures come on the heels of other Value Village closures in recent years including stores on Cobb Parkway in Marietta between The Big Chicken and White Water, and Roswell Road in Alpharetta across from the former Andretti Indoor Karting & Games.  Value Village was forced to shut its longstanding Moreland Avenue store down in 2021 after being a neighborhood landmark since 1972.  Controversial developer Empire Communities replaced the dated shopping center with several hundred housing units and new retail space.

The Metropolitan Parkway store is within a generally poorly maintained shopping center and there is no indication that any other tenants in the center are closing.  The Douglasville store occupies a freestanding building, while the Sugar Hill store occupies an anchor space within a moderately well-maintained center with again no indication that other tenants are leaving or that a redevelopment is planned.

Value Village has also in recent years been forced to relocate some of its stores as they did with stores along Memorial Drive in Decatur and on Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville.  The group did not indicate if they plan to seek new sites for the three stores that are actively liquidating.

Following the closures the group will continue to operate the following stores in metro Atlanta, according to its website:

3857 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker

4749 Jonesboro Road, Forest Park

1416 Dogwood Drive, Conyers

2281 Browns Bridge Road, Gainesville

7055-A Highway 85, Riverdale

2280 Main Street E., Snellville

3435 Memorial Drive, Decatur

Value Village is, of course, one of several thrift store operators in metro Atlanta.  Another, Park Avenue Thrift, has seven stores in metro Atlanta plus one outlet in Lawrenceville, too.  The most dominant player, however, is Goodwill Industries and their Atlanta affiliate, Goodwill of North Georgia, which operates seventy stores across the northern portion of the state.  Goodwill's size and success enables them to pay for more expensive and in some cases, ground-up construction for their stores, putting smaller operators like Value Village at a significant disadvantage.

Signs at the Metropolitan Parkway Value Village indicate that the store is slated to close as of Sunday, April 28.
