[ARRR!] Captain D's Quietly Walked the Plank in Tucker

Captain D's Seafood Kitchen has closed its longstanding restaurant at 2032 Montreal Road in Tucker.  The freestanding fast food eatery, located just off LaVista Road, abruptly shut without notice Monday, according to local ToNeTo Atlanta readers.  DeKalb County property records indicate that the restaurant was built in 1976.

The seafood chain in 2023 closed a location on Greenbriar Parkway just outside Greenbriar Mall that is becoming a new Popeyes.

It remains to be seen what if anything may become of the Montreal restaurant in the near term, but real estate sources suggest that its location off, rather than on, LaVista Road weakens its redevelopment or backfill potential.

In recent months, the Northlake area has seen several businesses close, including Captain D's neighbor, Kacey's Home Cooking, which is being replaced by a new Fifth Third Bank, and McDonald's, which continues to sit empty.

That said, a locally owned Dunkin' in front of the nearby Kroger has been a neighborhood staple for more than four decades with the Lee family having owned it since 1985.

Nashville-based Captain's D's started in 1969 and has today grown to include 535 restaurants across 23 states.  Years ago, the chain closed several intown locations but has more recently opened several new units in the greater metro Atlanta area including those in Marietta (former Dunkin'), Norcross (new build), and Stockbridge (former Hardee's), among others.

Not far from the Montreal location, Captain D's last fall reopened their Hugh Howell restaurant after a fire had severely damaged it.  Over in Decatur, a Captain D's on Church Street was also damaged by a fire and remains "temporarily closed."

Despite the chain's intown struggles over the years, Captain D's has more than 100 locations in Georgia, primarily in the suburbs and tertiary markets.  The chain's chief rival, Long John Silver's, has just nine locations left open in Georgia.

Are you a fan of Captain D's?  What would you like to see open in place of Captain D's on Montreal Road?  What type of food or restaurant do you feel is missing from the Northlake/Tucker area?
