A new location of Bone Island Grillhouse is coming to Athens.  Bone Island features a casual American menu with assorted salads, seafood, steaks and "B.I.G. Bowls." The new Bone Island is planned for a free-standing, roughly 7,000 square foot outparcel of Epps Bridge Centre.  The center is anchored by Georgia Theatre Company's University 16 Cinemas and is also home to retailers Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods and Marshalls.  The Bone Island restaurant will be situated between Freddy's and a McDonald's (N.A.P. of the center.) The original Bone Island is located on Greensboro Road near Lake Oconee.

Though upcoming Thai eatery Bangkok Station has not officially announced their opening day, one can make OpenTable reservations for lunch and dinner as soon May 16th.  Bangkok Station is located in the 550 Pharr Road office building, just off Piedmont Road in Buckhead.

The Athlete's Foot is again growing its presence in metro Atlanta.  A new The Athlete's Foot (taf) store recently opened in Smyrna at Cumberland Mall, joining the other existing store on Lee Street in Atlanta.  The footwear retailer once had locations in many metro area malls, but has struggled to compete with the likes of Foot Locker and Champs Sports as well as Finish Line.  The Athlete's Foot opened a store at Lenox Square around early 2010 that last a few years, but today operates as "City Gear." The taf store at Lenox was at least the chain's second attempt at the mall, and I'm fairly confident the new store at Cumberland is at least the second attempt there as well.

Infinity Yoga will celebrate of the opening of their second location May 16th and 17th.  Following their successful Brookhaven location on Dresden Drive, the new Infinity Yoga will open on Mount Vernon Road with neighbors invited to enjoy a free class during their opening weekend.

Southern California-based lifestyle retailer Planet Blue plans to bring its first store to the east coast with a new 3200 square foot location in Buckhead Atlanta.  The first Planet Blue opened in Malibu in 1995 and today the chain operates a six locations in its home state.  A single Planet Blue operates in Scottsdale, Arizona as well as a pair of locations in Japan.  Planet Blue is primarily a women's retailer selling assorted clothing and accessory brands as well as their own private label merchandise.   The Buckhead Atlanta location will be on Buckhead Avenue and should be open later this summer.

New Which Wich and Dunkin' Donuts are coming to Walton Way in Augusta.  The two eateries will be built on property formerly a house and a Jiffy Lube.  Both businesses are expected to open later this summer.

A new freestanding Krispy Kreme is coming to Dalton. The new doughnut shop will be built on West Walnut Avenue in place of a shuttered Wendy's restaurant.

Deadwood Saloon has closed on 12th Street in midtown.  The western themed bar opened in 2010 before which it was home to the first Twisted Taco (ten years).  Popular lesbian bar My Sister's Room will relocate from East Atlanta Village with plans to reopen in July in the former Deadwood space.  My Sister's room is currently owned and operated by Jami Siden and Jennifer Maguire aka Chase Daniels. The bar was originally in Midtown in the late 90s before relocating to  Decatur and later East Atlanta Village in 2007.

Goodwill of North Georgia will celebrate the opening of their 53rd store Thursday May 14th on Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur. The store is located in Chapel Square shopping center near the intersection of Wesley Chapel Road and Flat Shoals Parkway.

Midtown's Varuni Napoli has reopened after suffering water damage from a false alarm fire emergency last week.

Judy Johnson of Sandpiper womens boutique is launching a new concept, Mint by Sandpiper.  Details are scarce at this point, but the store will open at 245 North Highland Avenue (across from Parish) in Inman Park and will sell both clearance and consignment items.  The now defunct Blue Genes boutique operated a similar venture, Green Genes, where they would liquidate both old merchandise as well as take in merchandise from the public in exchange for either credit or discounts towards new merchandise.  Given owner Judy Johnson also heads the bi-annual Original Boutique Warehouse Sale, perhaps other stores will provide their past season merchandise for liquation in what could become a perpetual sale space.  Judy Johnson, a longtime shopper of Sandpiper, purchased the business from original owner Melissa Jagoe about two years ago.  Sandpiper's current sole location is in Vinings Jubilee although they once had a second location in City Walk, off Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

Tory Burch Bringing Second Store to Buckhead

The existing Tory Burch store at Phipps Plaza
Tory Burch doubles down in Buckhead

New York-based Tory Burch is planning a second location in Atlanta.  The new Tory Burch will open in place of the current Guess store which is relocating.  Ironically, the Guess store is relocating to the former C.Wonder, a store started by Chris Burch, ex-husband of Tory.  C. Wonder, referred to by many retail observers as "revenge retail," was seen as by many as a cheap imitation of the Tory Burch brand.  C. Wonder ceased operations earlier this year after heavy expansion and sluggish sales.

The current Atlanta Tory Burch store is on the first floor of Phipps Plaza.  Tory Burch expanded and relocated in 2012 to its current location near Starbucks.  Before relocating, the store was a few storefronts away and was one of the original stores outside of New York. Kate Spade, a store that would seem to compliment Tory Burch, recently relocated from Lenox Square to a space adjacent to Tory's Phipps Plaza location.

According to a building permit filed this week with the City of Atlanta, $200,000 will be spent to convert the space to Tory Burch.  The new store is roughly 4,400 square feet, significantly larger than the current store.  A Tory Burch store representative claims that both stores will offer largely the same merchandise and that the new store is to open in late October.

After opening their second location, Tory Burch will join Sunglass Hut, Tumi, Teavana, Starbucks, Mori Luggage & Gifts, Soma Intimates & Michael Kors in operating stores in both Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza.

Since launching the brand in 2004, Tory Burch has grown her namesake label to a billion dollar brand with dozens of stores around the world.

Do you find it odd that Tory Burch is bringing a second location to Buckhead rather than opening at Perimeter Mall or Avalon?  What are your thoughts on the Tory Burch brand?  Do you miss C.Wonder?

The General Muir Team Advancing in the Bread Business

The General Muir is expanding operations.

The team behind The General Muir is expanding their bakery operations by taking over the adjacent former home of Sweet Monkey frozen yogurt and cupcakes.  The roughly 2,000 square foot froyo / cupcake shop closed months ago and has sat vacant since.  The General Muir team plans to transform the space into a full fledged bakery, offering limited counter service retail products, as the space will function primarily as a production facility.

It's great to see the froyo shop get a new tenant, but larger spaces, specifically the former Bonefish Grill and La Tagliatella, remain vacant.

Head baker Rob Alexander will helm the baking program for the new facility.  Alexander started baking in 1996 and has since trained and worked all over the world.  Since arriving in Atlanta in 2008, Alexander has worked in senior baking roles for both H&F Bread Co. and Alon's Bakery.  Alexander joined The General Muir in 2014.

The Bakery at The General Muir should be open by late summer.   After opening,  the bakery plans to "curate select wholesale clients" with whom to supply breads, according to partner Shelley Sweet.  A slight increase in production is likely but don't be thinking those amazingly tasty cardamom brioche rolls and their popular bagels will last much longer than they do now!

The General Muir opened at Emory Point in 2013 and is easily the most popular and successful restaurant in the center.  Since opening, The General Muir has received a number of local and national accolades. Among the more notable honors: James Beard Foundation Semifinalist, best chef: southeast (2014), GQ 25 Best New Restaurants in America (2014), and Atlanta Magazine Restaurant of the Year (2013).

Along with The General Muir, the same ownership group runs West Egg Cafe (and pop-up Oddbird), as well as Yalla and Fred's Meat & Bread at Krog Street Market.

Initial plans call for the new bakery to take some of the burden off of the main restaurant in supplying breads and pastries for the various points of sale.  One market in particular, the Grant Park Farmers Market, was previously serviced by HF Bread but The General Muir took over last year.

The General Muir team is not alone in the artisanal bread business.

Buckhead Bread from the Buckhead Life group operates a wholesale bread market at their Corner Café on Piedmont Road.  Mae's Bakery on Lenox Road has branched out into wholesale breads to extend their brand and capture more sales.  Highland Bakery recently entered into a partnership with Rising Roll to supply them bread and pastries.

Billy and Kristin Allin of Decatur's Cakes & Ale plan to open their new standalone Inman Park bakery, Proof Bakeshop, in about a week on Hurt Street in Atlanta.

What are your thoughts on The General Muir expansion? Where is your favorite bakery in Atlanta?  Who in Atlanta makes the best cookie? Croissant? Bagel?

Novo Almost Open in Dunwoody!

Novo Cucina to open this week in Dunwoody

Riccardo Ullio quietly soft-opened his latest restaurant, Novo Cucina, last week.  Open for lunch this past Thursday through Sunday, Novo is closed today and tomorrow and will reopen Wednesday, with more menu items, for lunch and dinner.

As I was first to report last year, the casual Italian eatery opened in place of what was once a Pizza Hut in Dunwoody Village.  The roughly 2,500 square foot restaurant is located in Dunwoody Hall shopping center on Chamblee Dunwoody Road in Dunwoody Village.  When I reported on Novo's opening last January, Ullio told me he hoped to be open by April (2014), but apparently he sustained a number of construction / renovation related setbacks.

Novo's menu draws on Ullio's Italian roots, featuring assorted pizza, pasta, risotto and salads in addition to a wide range of wines.  There are over twenty different pizzas offered ranging from eight to thirteen dollars.  Novo will also have a an Enomatic wine serving system.  An Enomatic system is capable of preserving wine for up to 4 weeks, extending the freshness of wines by the glass for restaurateurs and consumers alike.

Novo marks Ullio's first OTP foray for his U Restaurants which include popular Inman Park restaurants Sotto Sotto and Fritti as well as midtown's Escorpion.

Have you been to Novo?  If so, what were your thoughts?  Are you excited about the opening?

Rare Escada Boutique Coming to Lenox Square

Inside of a typical Escada boutique
Escada planning Lenox Square location

German fashion house Escada plans to open a new boutique on the first floor of Lenox Square's Luxury Wing.  The store will occupy suite "3029D" which, given a recent renumbering of the suites, I believe to be the former Kate Spade store. Kate Spade relocated from Lenox Square to Phipps Plaza last year. Their former Lenox store was located between Carolina Herrera and Ralph Lauren in the Neiman Marcus-anchored Luxury Wing.

Escada, primarily a womens clothing and accessory luxury brand, started in Germany in 1976.

Escada has an existing Atlanta area presence in Neiman Marcus at Lenox Square and at Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza where both its signature and Escada Spot lines are carried.

In late 2009, Indian entrepreneur Megha Mittal purchased Escada, which had filed for bankruptcy.  Mittal  is a 1997 graduate of the Wharton School of Business with a B.S. in Economics with a concentration in Finance.

Although I question the expansion of a brand that has struggled to stay relevant in recent years, Escada's opening in Lenox is a great sign of the strength of the mall.

A brief online search shows that the store is actively seeking to fill various sales and management positions with a planned fall opening.

What are your thoughts on Escada opening a store in Atlanta?  Are you a fan of the Escada brand?  Do you think Escada should have opened in Buckhead Atlanta?

New signage on Frank Ski's Restaurant & Lounge reflects a name change, it's now Klass Restaurant & Lounge.  The restaurant was listed for sale in February.  I reached out to a source close to the situation who alleges there was no sale, just a "change in management." The reported management change seems to have led to serial nightclub owner Kevin C. Edwards being brought into the fold.  Edwards is the same man behind such establishments as Kouture, Krave and Kapture, along with Cafe Circa and Indigo Bar.  Ironically, Ski's earliest attempt at the lounge business was a club / lounge called "Kolor" that was proposed in a center in Buckhead by the InterContinental Hotel.  After neighbors voiced their disapproval, the project was abandoned.

Pizza Crosta, a pizza concept, plans to open at The Prado in Sandy Springs next Monday May 18th. Pizza Crosta was created by Sam Abdullah and his team at Buckhead Pizza Company.  Similar to concepts such as Your Pie, Pizza Crosta offers individual 10 inch pizzas starting at $7.99.  Pizza Crosta will also offer assorted salads and chicken wings along will beer and wine.  Pizza Crosta replaced the failed Evos eatery on the lower level of the center between Marlow's Tavern and Fuego Mundo.

Great American Cookie Co. has reopened on the upper level of Lenox Square in Buckhead.  The popular cookie shop closed last year amidst clouded circumstances.  Now under the ownership of a different franchisee, the new Great American is located near Abercrombie & Fitch, almost directly above its former location.

A new center in Augusta, The Market at Windsor Spring, will welcome an approximately 41,000 square foot Walmart Neighborhood Market.  The new center is being built at the intersection of Tobacco Road & Windsor Springs Avenue and will also have about 15,000 square feet of additional retail space.  The Walmart is expected to open in early 2016.

A new Bojangles' is planned for Canton Road in Marietta. The new roughly 3,800 square foot Bojangles' will be built in place of the shuttered Players Sportsbar & Grill on Canton Road near Brackett Road. The freestanding building was built in 1982 as a Shoney's before becoming a number of independent restaurants later.  Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bojangles' already has locations in Marietta, Acworth and Canton, and will soon open a new location in Sandy Springs.  The growing chain went public last week and shot up over 25% in its first day.

My friends at The Carrollton Menu report that a new Kroger (likely to be a Marketplace store) is planned for Villa Rica. The new Kroger would be built at the southwestern corner of Hickory Level Road and Highway 61.  Kroger's regional headquarters in Tucker confirmed interest in the area but would not confirm size or a construction timeline. Kroger Marketplace stores are usually over 110,000 square feet and carry assorted non-grocery items such as expanded baby goods, kids' toys, jewelry and more.  The first Kroger Marketplace in Georgia opened in late 2013, replacing a dated "Greenhouse" Kroger in Carrollton Crossroads shopping center.

Just 3 Corners Remain: Westside Corner Tavern Closed

Corner  Tavern has closed its westside location

Signage at The Westside location of Corner Tavern suggests that the restaurant is "renovating." A call to another location, however, confirms it is instead closed and has "merged with" its Little 5 Points location, according to a spokesperson at the Little 5 location.  The Westside Corner Tavern was located on Huff Road beneath the Apex West Midtown apartments.  The Westside location originally opened during summer, 2010.  In early 2013, the location suffered significant damage resulting from an unsuccessful attempt (by car) of would-be thieves hoping to access the restaurant's ATM.

La Urbana tequila & mezcal bar was located alongside Corner Tavern at Apex but re-concepted earlier this yearto become a new location of Monterrey Mexican Restaurant. Bone Lick BBQ remains open in a space adjacent to the Corner Tavern space.

Three remaining Corner Tavern locations in East Point, Edgewood and Little 5 will reportedly remain open.  The Little 5 location reopened this past March after a May 2013 fire forced it to close.

Firenze Ristorante to Close in Norcross

Italian eatery to make way for Asian concept.

Firenze Ristorante at 6025 Peachtree Parkway in Norcross will close later this week. The 6,000 square foot restaurant is located in the same center as Nemoe's Bar & Tavern (fka Slocum's Tavern & Grill).  Firenze seemed to have offered discounts and deals on just about every site from Scoutmob to Living Social to Groupon, and likely many others.  Despite their constant marketing efforts, locals tell me the restaurant never seemed all that busy and was just not that good.

In its place, a new, as yet unnamed concept specializing in "Asian street food and tapas," will open.   The new concept will reportedly have a "killer lounge and outdoor patio."

DEKA Atlanta Closing as Owner Relocates to California

DEKA closing Atlanta store.

Atlanta-based DEKA will soon close its Atlanta area location at the Shops Around Lenox in Buckhead. The popular women's athletic retailer carried brands such as Stella McCartney, Y-3 and Newton.  Store owner Jim Whitlow is relocating his family to California and made the decision to close up shop rather than try and maintain a store on the opposite side of the country.  The store is expected to close in the coming weeks.

DEKA first opened on Pharr Road in 2007 before relocating to the Shops Around Lenox in late 2010.  A "pop up" DEKA men's boutique opened in the center in 2011, but only stayed one season.  In the years that followed, Whitlow opened a satellite DEKA in Chicago on Michigan Avenue, and later a location in SoHo New York, but both locations have since closed.

Bevello, another women's boutique adjacent to DEKA, closed earlier this year and like DEKA, was previously a portion of the former CompUSA.  There is no definitive word on what business or businesses may be interested in the spaces, but there are reportedly already multiple parties expressing interest.

I spoke with Whitlow briefly today and he told me he intends to relaunch DEKA in California once he gets acclimated.  He reportedly is actively seeking a location but was unable to confirm a location or an expected timeline.

Jim has pledged to remain an Atlanta Braves fan despite his relocation.

Ford Fry Hopes to Be King of New "Court"

Superica's existing location at Krog Street Market in Inman Park
It's official! Ford Fry plans to open a third restaurant in Buckhead.

Ford Fry plans to open a second location of his "Mex-Tex" eatery Superica.  I'd heard this "rumor" for months, but had been unable to confirm it. Now "Superica" is listed as a tenant of the same Buckhead center previously linked to the plans.

Located in a 6,600 square foot space in Buckhead Court, Superica replaces the former Outback Steakhouse,  which closed last August. Initial plans call for Superica to open in "early 2016."

Ford Fry already operates King + Duke at West Paces Ferry & Peachtree Roads as well as St. Cecilia at Peachtree and Lenox Roads, both in Buckhead.

The first Superica opened in mid-February in Krog Street Market in Inman Park.  Another Ford Fry eatery, The El Felix, opened this past November in Avalon in Alpharetta.

Superica Buckhead will be Ford Fry's ninth restaurant in metro Atlanta.

Chef Ford Fry, through his LLC Rocket Farm Restaurants, will also be opening Marcel, on the Westside.  Slated to open in July,  Marcel will occupy the former Abatoir space at Westside Provisions.  The "beefsteak dinner-inspired steakhouse" gets its name comes from Marcellin “Marcel” Cerdan, a French boxer of the 1900s.

Ford Fry is also opening what will likely be an Optimist-like seafood eatery at the new Inman Quarter development in Inman Park.

Buckhead Court, located on Roswell Road at Le Brun Road in north Buckhead, has seen its occupancy steadily rise in recent years.

The addition of Superica to Buckhead Court leaves the center with only two small vacancies, together totaling less than 2,000 square feet.  Dtox, a popular organic juice bar, will relocate from a hidden space near Pie Shop and Storico Fresco to Buckhead Court, occupying 750 square feet.  Regency Centers, the property's owner, previously leased a 4,500 square foot space to Play It Again Sports.  The used sporting goods retailer relocated from nearby Chastain Square.

Regency Centers also owns Powers Ferry Square, a nearby center that recently added popular eatery bartaco to its offerings.  The former 1,800 square foot Dunkin' Donuts was demolished and rebuilt as a 4,025 square foot bartaco with a patio.

Bartaco, which serves assorted tacos and rice bowls, is by no means a direct competitor to Superica, which offers a far larger, more upscale menu.  Still, one has to wonder how many Mexican eateries north Buckhead can handle.

As a resident of the area, it's hard not to be amazed at the concentration of Mexican restaurants along Roswell Road.

Starting at Roswell & Piedmont Roads, one can opt for the casual, original location of Tin Lizzy's Cantina. Next, traveling north on Roswell, is bartaco, then the upcoming Superica.  The Publix-anchored Chastain Square is home to Tacos & Tequilas Mexican Grill.  In the adjacent Roswell-Wieuca shopping center, anchored by The Fresh Market, the original Willy's Mexicana Grill has been welcoming patrons since 1995. Slightly north, at the corner of Wieuca and Roswell Roads, La Fonda Latina has been a popular haunt for many years.  Just north, Taxco, another locally owned Mexican eatery, has been serving authentic Mexican fare for years.  Just past Taxco, the new Sandy Springs "Gateway" project is slated to welcome Chipotle Mexican Grill, Cheeky Mexican Taqueria and a new, yet similarly themed concept from the owners of Verde Taqueria.

What are your thoughts on the abundance of Mexican options in north Buckhead?  What would you like most to see open in the area? What are your thoughts on Superica and how it compares with other Ford Fry restaurants?

Please share your thoughts below.

Phoenix, Arizona-based Sprouts Farmers Market has set August 5th as the opening date for its new store in Roswell Market Place on Alpharetta Highway in Roswell. Sprouts previously announced June 10th as the opening date for its new store at Olde Ivy Village on East West Connector in Smyrna.  Additional new Sprouts Farmers Market locations are planned for Fuqua Development's Piedmont Avenue project near Morningside, as well as their Sugarloaf Marketplace Center in Duluth. (The Duluth location was previously rumored, and has since been confirmed.)  Other Sprouts will open in the new "Gateway" project on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, as well as in Providence Square on Roswell Road in East Cobb.  There are rumored to be "multiple" other Sprouts planned for metro Atlanta but I've thus far been unable to identify any additional locations.
Bangkok Station, a contemporary new Thai restaurant, opened last week in Buckhead.  Located in the lobby level of the office building at 550 Pharr Road, Bangkok Station serves lunch and dinner.

Pizza Crosta, a new fast casual pizza eatery from the team behind Buckhead Pizza Company, opened earlier this week in the Prado in Sandy Springs.  Pizza Crosta opened in place of the failed evos eatery, on the lower level near Fuego Mundo.  Pizza Crosta, like others in the growing segment offers 10""design your own" pies for $7.99.

A BP gas station and convenience store I first announced last May is reportedly finally on track and will soon begin construction.  The new BP will be built on vacant land at the corner of Old Peachtree Road and Satellite Boulevard in Suwanee.

Cincinnati-based Kroger reportedly plans to bring at least two more "Kroger Marketplace" stores to Augusta and  Cartersville.  The new stores will each be over 100,000 square feet and offer jewelry, expanded toy and household goods offerings, and fuel.  There are about 100 Marketplace format stores nationwide under a number of Kroger-owned monikers.  The first Kroger Marketplace store in Georgia opened in 2013 in Carrollton. Subsequent Marketplace stores have opened in Athens, Savannah and Gainesville, among other cities.

A new location of Foot Solutions is coming soon to Providence Square in East Cobb.  The franchised retailer specializes in customized arch support and fit footwear for men and women. The new roughly 1,800 square foot Foot Solutions will be located to the right of the upcoming Sprouts Farmers Market.  Foot Solutions has existing Atlanta area locations in Alpharetta, Acworth, Sandy Springs and Buckhead, among other cities.

Longstanding local business Jason's Pawn Shop has closed.  The pawn shop was located in a 2,000 square foot space in North Decatur Plaza, at the corner of North Decatur and Clairmont Roads.

Local organic juice bar Dtox is expected to open their new Westside store late this month at Westside Provisions District. The new shop will be located in a kiosk near the bridge under the covered walkway.  Currently Dtox has locations in Buckhead adjacent to Flywheel, and in midtown on Piedmont Avenue near Ansley Mall.  Another Dtox, currently located in a hidden Buckhead location, will soon relocate to Buckhead Court.

A large new QuikTrip is under construction at the corner of Wade Green and Hickory Grove Roads in Kennesaw.  The large new "Gen 3" QT convenience store and gas station replaced a number of abandoned structures and as well as a few homes.

Meherwan Irani, founder of Chai Pani (with locations in Asheville, NC and Decatur), announced a name for his previously announced food stall at Ponce City Market. Hosting a preview tasting at 4th & Swift last night, Irani revealed the new restaurant will be called Boti.  Boti, the name for a marinated and skewered piece of meat, will serve Indian street food in a 1,700 square foot space in the market's food hall.  Boti's menu will be largely kebobs but will also feature fresh made naan as well as a full bar.  Boti is expected to open later this fall.

A new location of Baked is coming soon to the Tribute Lofts in the Old 4th Ward.  The original Baked is located on Johnson Ferry Road in East Cobb.  The Tribute Lofts are located at the corner of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Boulevard near Freedom Parkway.   Baked owner Scott Bianculli opened the original Baked in 2012 and at first primarily offered freshly prepared take-out options.  Baked's popularity grew and as did its offerings.  Currently, Baked offers dine in, take out, catering, and delivery.  The new Baked will be adjacent to Condesa Coffee and is expected to open late this summer.

Not so Fast: McDonald's Opening in Place of Former QuikTrip

Burger joint bound for former gas station.

A new McDonald's will soon break ground on Chamblee Tucker Road in Chamblee.  The new twin drive-thru unit will be built at the corner of Chamblee Tucker Road and DeKalb Technology Parkway.  The 3,700 square foot fast food restaurant replaces a former QuikTrip which was recently demolished.  Tulsa, Oklahoma-based QuikTrip opened a new, larger format "Gen 3" gas station and C-store across the street in 2013.

I first got wind of the planned McDonald's last year, but it seemed to have stalled.  New information confirms a ground lease was executed for the parcel and that construction will commence soon.

Don Thompson stepped down as President and CEO of McDonald's this past January and Brit Steve Easterbrook now heads the billion dollar burger business.  McDonald's has struggled to drive sales, often aggravating franchisees with the addition of new products and equipment.

McDonald's previously added new area locations in Brookhaven on Clairmont Road near Buford Highway (a relocation) and on Buford Highway in Doraville, about a half mile outside the perimeter.  A new McDonald's also opened on North Druid Hills Road in place of the former Atlanta Diner in Brookhaven.

Not far away from the upcoming McDonald's, on the other side of Chamblee Tucker, a new Zaxby's will also soon start construction.  The Zaxby's, too, has been stalled for months.  The former Bon Auto Service shop the chicken joint will replace was recently demolished to prepare for the construction.  The site is about 2 blocks from I-285 and across the street from the Kroger-anchored Embry Village shopping center.

McDonald's has streamlined its construction process to the point where they can have most standard restaurants open in about 90 days.  I'd expect for the upcoming Chamblee location to take about that long.  The upcoming Zaxby's will likely take longer, perhaps four to five months.

While Zaxby's is not (yet) a publicly traded company, McDonald's is, as are Burger King and Wendy's.

Below are yesterday's closing stock prices for the three burger chains and closing prices from the time of my previous post on 4/23/13.

Restaurant Brands International Inc (QSR) $41.07 / +5.20% YTD
McDonald's (MCD) $100.11 / +6.84% YTD
Wendy's (WEN) $11.57 / +28.13% YTD

Burger King (BKW) $18.31 / +11.37% YTD
McDonald's (MCD) $99.32 / +12.59% YTD
Wendy's (WEN) $5.42 / +15.32% YTD

Following the 2014 merger with Tim Hortons, Burger King is now known as Restaurant Brands International and trades under the QSR ticker symbol.

As you can see, McDonald's stock price has remained about the same while Wendy's has performed especially well, up over 100% since my last post.

Fun Factoid: A new film called "The Founder" will soon begin shooting in metro Atlanta.  The film stars Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc, the man credited with growing McDonald's into one of the most well known brands on the planet.

Fore! Exciting New Restaurants Planned for East Lake

The new Greater Good BBQ may look something like this
Fellini's founders bringing new restaurants to East Lake.

Fellini’s Pizza and La Fonda Latina owners Mike Nelson and Clay Harper and their partners, Jay Martin and Nathan Bolster, are bringing multiple restaurant concepts to the corners of Second Avenue and Hosea Williams Drive in East Lake. The restaurants will be located less than a mile from the prestigious East Lake Golf Club.

The East Lake Foundation and CF Foundation, Inc. partnered to bring the new restaurants to the neighborhood. The properties were purchased by the CF Foundation in 2005, but the originally planned construction was halted due to the recession.  The sale to the Fellini's group is good sign for the strength of the neighborhood and its prospects for the future.  “This investment will provide East Lake residents with a much needed destination for good, affordable, interesting food and drink” said Rick Bent, VP Real Estate and Development, CF Foundation, Inc.

Between them, Nelson and Harper have more than 30 years of  restaurant experience.  Atlanta native Jay Martin is the son of 2008 senate candidate Jim Martin.  According to his LinkedIn profile, Nathan Bolster is the co-owner of ampersand media,  a production company specializing in photo/film production and web content.

Over the next couple of months, construction will begin to convert the former gas station on the northwest corner into The Greater Good BBQ, the group's fast-casual barbecue concept. The owners hope to have The Greater Good opened later this fall.  On the southeast corner, the restaurateurs will modify the existing green building (formerly home to One Stop food market)  for two new restaurant concepts with outdoor seating, and to construct a third, small restaurant.  These additional concepts will follow The Greater Good, likely opening early next year.

A representative of the development indicated that none of the three "new" restaurants will be La Fonda Latina or Fellini's Pizza locations. (There is already a Fellini's Pizza less than three miles away on Commerce Drive in Decatur.)  The same restaurateurs previously operated a craft frozen yogurt shop in north Buckhead called Three on the Tree which later became a hot dog joint called Ringside Franks & Shakes.  The space the frozen yogurt shop and hot dog joint occupied is today home to The Greater Good BBQ.

The first Great Good BBQ opened in Tucker in 2012.

Nelson and Harper opened their first Fellini’s Pizza on Peachtree Road in Buckhead in 1983. In the years since, the group has expanded to include seven Fellini's, five La Fonda Latinas and two Greater Good BBQ locations, all in metro Atlanta.

New concept coming to downtown Atlanta

As first reported by my friends at Scoop OTP, a new fast casual flatbread eatery plans to open soon in downtown Atlanta. Situated near the dynamic intersection of Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Marietta Street, steps from CNN Center, Flats will feature "handcrafted flatbreads, paninis and salads as well as artisan juices."

The 1,200 square foot restaurant space will be heavily renovated and will reportedly see the addition of a small patio.  The space previously housed a Subway restaurant, but fear not, Subway still has a location across the street in CNN Center, as well as at least three near Georgia State.  Popular downtown bar Park Bar is located adjacent to the upcoming eatery, just off COP Drive on Walton Street.

A group of investors and restaurant industry veterans have partnered to bring the concept to market.

One of the partners, chef Scott Kinsey, operates the five-unit, Latin-Asian concept Taqueria Tsunami.  Before opening Taqueria Tsunami, Kinsey spent nearly eighteen years in senior chef capacities with Brinker International and later Hooters of America, where his wife was head of public relations for nearly ten years.

Scott Kinsey and his wife Alexis are co-owners of Fork U Concepts, LLC.  Fork U Concepts includes Taqueria Tsunami and single locations of both Stockyard Burgers & Bones and Pressed Panini Bar, both of which are located on the Marietta Square.  Taqueria Tsunami's original location in south Buckhead closed in late 2012, and is now home to the popular full service restaurant, 1Kept Kitchen & Bar.

It's highly likely that Flats will have some similarity to Pressed, but likely at a slightly higher cost.  I'm told the targeted average check is about eleven bucks, on the high end of the "fast casual" segment.

The panini or flatbread is nothing new, but is not currently available in such variety in any downtown locale that I'm aware of.

A similar concept, My Panini, closed in 2009 after a short run in Lindbergh City Center, adjacent to the Lindbergh MARTA station.

While being near MARTA and AT&T (now Cricket at Lindbergh) is great, it's hard to secure a better, more visible location for a new restaurant than Flats has.  A large billboard sits atop the restaurant and the eatery is a short walk from CNN Center, the World of Coca-Cola, Philips Arena, the Georgia World Congress Center, the Georgia Dome, Centennial Olympic Park, SkyView Atlanta and the Tabernacle, among others.

I'm not much of a fan of Subway, so if Flats is anything like my beloved but shuttered Miro Cafe in SoHo New York, I'll be all over it....when I'm downtown.

Pending permitting, plans call for Flats to open late summer / early fall.

What are your thoughts on this new eatery?  Are you disappointed you will have one less Subway in Atlanta?  What is your favorite downtown eatery?

After 21 months, Emory Village restaurant Ink & Elm announced last night via their facebook page that they are closing.  The restaurant plans to serve until Saturday, but could close sooner, depending on food supplies.  The upscale tavern and restaurant was first announced in September 2012, and opened after about a year of renovations. (The 7,000 square foot space was previously Emory Village Flowers & Gifts and Park Bench.)  The space, designed by local firm ai3, was perhaps too trendy and upscale for the neighborhood.   Emory University is a stone's throw away, but I doubt they were adding much to the bottom line. Having just spoken with property owner Stuart Meddin earlier this week, I'd say that the closure was apparently a surprise to all.  In an adjacent space, a previously announced third location of Lucky's Burgers & Brew is progressing and should be open late this summer.

A new Habitat for Humanity ReStore has opened in Roswell Shopping Center in Roswell.  The new 26,453-square-foot  store is the thirty-seventh location in Georgia. Roswell Shopping Center is located at 11060 Alpharetta Highway, at the southwest corner of the intersection of Alpharetta Highway and Sun Valley Drive.

Nicole Miller plans to relocate next month from the second floor of Lenox Square to the first floor of Phipps Plaza. The new store is about the same size as the current store and will reportedly carry the same merchandise.  The current store previously moved from the first floor of the Neiman Marcus-anchored Luxury Wing to the upper floor of the same wing. The new store will be adjacent to Nordstrom and will occupy the former Rangoni Firenze shoe store.       a1080C

Also in Buckhead, Herve Leger will be relocating to Phipps Plaza from Lenox Square.  It's believed that the previously announced Escada boutique will take the place of Herve Leger, rather than the old Kate Spade as I'd previously thought.  Herve Leger will first occupy the former Versace store near Saks Fifth Avenue, but will later relocate to an as yet undisclosed permanent home.  (Versace recently relocated to a the former Juicy Couture space closer to Nordstrom.)

Drew Van Leuven & friends reportedly hope to have their new restaurant Tavern Pointe open by early July in the former LPC (La Pietra Cucina) on Peachtree Street.

A new Ollie's Bargain Outlet is slated to celebrate its grand opening on June 10th at Wisteria Village in Snellville. The off-price general merchandise retailer has expanded their presence locally in recent years having also opened new locations in Duluth, Newnan and Stockbridge.

Goodwill of North Georgia will open its newest thrift store & donation center June 25th at 3898 Atlanta Highway in Bogart, near Athens.

Redefined Home Boutique plans to open a second store later this summer.  The furniture, lighting and home goods retailer, currently with a location on Howell Mill Road on the westside, will open a new location in TOWN Brookhaven in early August.  The new store will be about the same size as the existing location and will open at the corner Town Boulevard and Brookhaven Avenue, opposite Smash Kitchen & Bar.

According to my friends at The Douglasville Menu, Milton-based Provino's Italian Restaurant plans to close its Douglasville location near Arbor Place Mall no later than June 21st. The chain of casual Italian eateries began in Atlanta in 1977, and today includes eight Georgia locations (seven after the closure) and a single location in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  The owners also operate Scalini's Italian Restaurant on Cobb Parkway, not far from SunTrust Park. Provino's previously operated a location on Satellite Boulevard in Duluth, but it has since closed.  A well placed source indicated that additional Provino's closures be in the works.

Atlanta-based Willy's Mexicana Grill will be closing a number of their original locations over the coming weeks to renovate them and reopen them with their updated look. Debuted last year, the new Willy's interiors feature vibrant colors, mosaic tile and new flooring.   The Willy's on Roswell Road in north Buckhead plans to reopen today while the Willy's at West Paces Ferry is slated to close in early June for about a week. Willy's locations in Vinings, Peachtree Center, Hapeville, Norcross, Midtown and Perimeter have already undergone their respective remodels.  The new Willy's look was first introduced last year at the Willy's in Cherokee Plaza in Brookhaven and later, a slightly tweaked version, at the new Willy's at North Druid Hills and Briarcliff Roads.  Roswell Road in north Buckhead was Willy's first location in 1995, today, twenty years later, the group has 25.  The most recent Willy's opened in Peachtree City.  JC Garcia, President of Willy's, tells me more locations are planned...

As previously announced, Bill Hallman has closed his location at the Shops Around Lenox in Buckhead.  Hallman plans to reopen later this year in Inman Quarter (IQ) in Inman Park.  Hallman's closure comes on the heels of the news that popular athletic retailer DEKA is closing its location in the center as well.  Women's boutique bevello closed its location at the trendy Buckhead center in March. My guess is that American Apparel will be the next to go.

The Marietta location of Frontera Mex-Mex Grill was heavily damaged during an early morning fire yesterday morning.  Early indications are that the fire originated in the hood of the fryer.  The freestanding restaurant was located on Powers Ferry Road near Windy Hill Road.   Amazingly, the Marietta location is already gone from the Frontera website suggesting that it may not reopen.  According to the Frontera website, ownership is "working diligently" to move their Marietta staff to their other locations, of which there are twelve.

Following my December 2014 post, EZ One Price Cleaners is officially taking over the (former) Quiznos on Cheshire Bridge Road.  The business, also known as  "$1.99 Dry Cleaners," first opened on Roswell Road in north Buckhead in 2013 and later added a second location in Sandy Springs last year, also on Roswell Road.  If you are willing to risk having your clothes damaged / remain unclean, the shop is great.  At the end of the day, it's a deal and you get what you pay for.  They will likely ultimately do well but their business practices leave a lot to be desired.

A freestanding McDonald's restaurant on Roswell Road in Marietta has closed.  From the looks of it, the restaurant restaurant is at least 35 years old and had not completed recent renovations and upgrades.

Corner Tavern Reborn as "The Whelan"

The former Corner Tavern reopening as new eatery

Jason Daluv, reportedly one of the original partners of Corner Tavern, has taken over the group's former West Midtown location. The West Midtown location closed about two weeks ago after originally opening in 2010.

The new eatery, "The Whelan," is slated to open for dinner tonight at 6pm.  The restaurant gets its name from Daluv's mother whose maiden name was Whelan.

While Daluv is Irish, the eatery will not be an Irish pub. Instead, expect an "upscale pub atmosphere with American favorites."

The Whelan is located on Huff Road at the Apex West Midtown apartments.

Waving White Tablecloth, Veni Vidi Vici Announces Plans to Close Sunday

Veni Vidi Vici to close Sunday, May 31st

Atlanta-based Buckhead Life Restaurant Group has made the (predictable) decision to close its lone midtown eatery, Veni Vidi Vici. I say predictable, because the restaurant was the only full service restaurant in the group absent from their annual "Summer Dine Around" promotion. The Dine Around promotion begins next month, and the gift cards for the program arrived last week (obviously having been printed weeks earlier) but without Veni Vidi Vici as a an option.

Veni Vidi Vici, which means  "I came; I saw; I conquered" in Latin, is located at the corner of 14th and Spring Streets, and originally opened in 1990. At the time of its opening, the nearly 8000 square foot restaurant was part of a Dallas, Texas-based restaurant group that counted noted Italian chef Marcella Hazan as an investor.

With mounting debt related to back rent, the restaurant closed in  January 1993.  At the time, Buckhead Life came forward to take over the 226 seat restaurant.  Originally slated to be called "Bella Luna," Buckhead Life instead opted to retain the Veni Vidi Vici moniker when they reopened the eatery in March of 1993.  Pricci, which Buckhead Life opened in 1991, originally competed with Veni Vidi Vici, and was now a sibling concept within the same family.

It has always seemed odd for BLRG to operate a single midtown restaurant when their name is "Buckhead," and their greatest concentration of restaurants is in Buckhead. Industry sources indicate the closure has been discussed for months, if not years, as the group concentrates on its Buckhead and south Florida restaurants.

A BLRG representative indicated that all employees of Veni Vidi Vici are being offering positions at the group's other Atlanta area restaurants.

BLRG previously closed their Asian eatery Bluepointe in Buckhead in late 2011. The following year, the group closed their popular southwestern restaurant, Nava, also in Buckhead.  Chef Ford Fry subsequently opened King + Duke in the former Nava in 2013 and St. Cecilia in the former Bluepointe space in 2014.  As if Fry does not have already enough on his plate, might he make a play at the soon to be vacant Veni Vidi Vici?

Buckhead Life continues to operate its Buckhead restaurants: Atlanta Fish Market, Chops Lobster Bar, Bistro Niko, Buckhead Bread Co. & Corner Cafe, Kyma, Pricci, Buckhead Diner and 103 West, originally a restaurant that today serves as a private dining facility.  The group also operates mini versions of its Buckhead Diner, Nava, Pricci and Chops restaurants at Philips Arena in partnership with Levy Restaurants.

Buckhead Life entered south Florida in 2007 with the opening of a Chops Lobster Bar in Boca Raton.  The group added City Fish Market to Boca Raton the following year.  In 2013, the group opened their first "new" concept in Lobster Bar Sea Grille, a more casual version of the popular Chops Lobster Bar concept.

A restaurant spokesperson told me the group is actively looking for new locations of both their City Fish Market and Lobster Bar Sea Grille restaurants in metro Atlanta.  No leases are signed but I'd guess that the new mixed-use development around SunTrust Park in Cobb county could be a prospect for at least one of the restaurants.  Chops Lobster Bar could also see additional locations, possibly in both Georgia and Florida.

What is your favorite Buckhead Life restaurant?  Are you still holding your breath for some version of  Pano's & Paul's to reopen?  Do you think Ford Fry should take over the Veni Vidi Vici space?

They're Outta Here! Coach Exits Perimeter Mall

Leathergoods purveyor shutters.

New York City-based Coach has closed its store at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.  The store was located on the mall's upper level near the escalator.

Remaining Coach stores are at Lenox Square in Buckhead, Mall of Georgia in Buford and at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.  Coach also operates outlet stores in North Georgia Premium Outlets in Dawsonville, Tanger Outlets in Locust Grove and The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta in Woodstock.  Coach closed their store at Phipps Plaza last summer and their store at North Point Mall this past December.

Newly acquired Coach brand Stuart Weitzman continues to operate a store in the Nordstrom wing at Perimeter Mall as well as in the Neiman Marcus wing at Lenox Square.

Following their fiscal second quarter sales announcement in late January, Coach said it would be "redesigning certain stores and closing under-performing ones." Perimeter would seem to be one of their "under-performing" locations while Lenox Square, currently receiving a light remodel, is perhaps their better performer.

Michael Kors, a direct competitor of Coach, remains open on the upper level of Perimeter Mall, near the Dillard's wing. Michael Kors also operates stores in Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza, Cumberland Mall, North Point Mall, Mall of Georgia and an outlet at The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta in Woodstock.

Previously said to be "eating Coach's lunch," now Michael Kors is struggling, too.  The retailer would seem to have expanded too much, making its "luxury" goods available in too many places.  In the world of luxury goods, cachet is everything, and Coach and Michael Kors appear to have lost theirs.

Will Barber Bistro "Cut it" in Atlanta?

A new dining experience is coming to Cobb County

Barber Bistro Fine Grooming & Dining is opening "soon" on Cobb Parkway in Marietta.  The new combination hair salon and restaurant will open in Chicago Plaza, a small strip center just south of Dobbins Air Reserve Base.

Barber Bistro will be situated between existing locations of Subway and MetroPCS.

Based on social media postings, the business seems to have been in the works since at least last January.  Research indicates that a similarly named business previously operated in Memphis, Tennessee.   A man named Rock Dillon appears to be the operator of both the former Memphis location and the upcoming Atlanta location.  A facebook account linked to the Atlanta business seemed to suggest that as of November 17th, 2014, the opening was slated for January 10, 2015.

An update posted recently indicates that the opening is now scheduled for June 27th.

Permits posted on the windows at the business indicate that they were filed July 23, 2014.  I called the City of Marietta to verify the status of the permits, and apparently new inspections were completed this past February 17th and 18th. Interestingly, to comply with building code, the business is separated into two suites, the barber shop in "300," and the bistro in "350." Building code apparently prohibits a hair salon and a restaurant from operating out of a single space, go figure.  Despite the code requirement and the "two inspections," there seemed to be just one primary door, a single "business name," and a single suite identified: 300.

Another social media post seemed to explain the separation of the two businesses:

"Hair & Food Dont Mix @barberbistro, Glass Circle Windows To Seperated the Shop & Restaurant......Atlanta Hair Industry Will Never Be The Same!"

Photo from 2/16/14 as seen on Instagram via @BarberBistroATL
The limited facebook previously indicated the establishment was a "Family Style Restaurant," but was updated this week to refer to it as a "Barber Shop Restaurant." Additionally, hookah, a type of flavored tobacco popular in the middle east, will be offered to patrons after 7PM.

Strangely, the pictures on the business's Instagram account (which has nearly 7,000 followers) are a mix of stock photos of other restaurants like Bistro Niko, and assorted glamour shots of haircuts.

A new post complete with a new logo claim that Barber Bistro is "The 1st barber shop & restaurant in the U.S." While a strange idea combining a barber shop and bistro, it would seem that Rock Dillon is not the first to open such a business. Aside from the obvious, (counting their prior location in Memphis,) this would be the second such establishment in the U.S.  A quick internet search, however, shows that at least one other similar business, Scottsdale, Arizona-based "minibar.ber.shop," previously operated a handful of locations, all of which seem to have closed.

I visited the business last week and observed a work site seemingly weeks from completion.

A glimpse inside the still very under construction Barber Bistro
What are your thoughts on the odds of success for this new business? Does the idea of a combined barber shop and restaurant appeal to you?  If it stays open long enough, do you think Barber Bistro will attract baseball players from nearby SunTrust Park?

Pure Taqueria is now open in Brookleigh Marketplace on Johnson Ferry Road.  The new eatery features a rooftop patio and a full bar. This new location in Brookhaven marks the chain's sixth overall location.

The former location of The Real Chow Baby at the Mall of Georgia in Buford will soon reopen as a new Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant.  The stir fly eatery closed earlier this year, as did its original west midtown location last year.

A new location of Newk's Eatery is coming to The Forum in Norcross.  The new fast casual eatery will open in suite 105, formerly home to The Children's Place.  The space is next to Hallmark and a few doors down from Trader Joe's.  The restaurant will be about 4,000 square feet inside and feature an approximately 430 square foot outdoor patio.  Newk's has five locations in Georgia with a handful more in the works for the metro area.

California Pizza Kitchen will spend $500,000 to renovate their restaurant at Lenox Square according to a permit with the City of Atlanta.  All I can say is, it's about time!

New locations of Jimmy John's are coming soon to The Publix-anchored The Peach shopping center on Peachtree Road as well as Lindbergh City Center on Piedmont Road.

The owners of Colossus Pizza on Five Forks Trickum Road in Stone Mountain have opened a second restaurant. Colossus Restaurant opened recently in the former Sangria's Mexican Cafe in the Staples-anchored Tucker Plaza shopping center on Hugh Howell Road in Tucker.

A new Vietnamese restaurant called Pho King is opening soon at The Shops of Buckhead (2221 Peachtree Road) in south Buckhead.  The new restaurant replaces Sakana Sushi & Grill Japanese Restaurant in the roughly 1,800 square foot space.  The center is also home to CamiCakes, Alexis Suitcase and the recently opened Big Al's Gourmet Butter Burgers.

CamiCakes has opened a new location in Mansell Crossing on North Point Parkway near North Point Mall. Additionally, another location that will offer both ice cream and cupcakes via "CamiCakes Creamery" is slated to open "no later than July 1st" on Camp Creek Parkway in East Point.  There are currently two CamiCakes in Florida and four in Georgia.

Although it lasted far longer than I'd expected, Pita's Republic has closed its sole Atlanta location on Peachtree Street in midtown.  In its place, Subway will open a new location in the 1,400 square foot space in the street level of "The Windsor Over Peachtree" condo building.  Gorin's Homemade Ice Cream & Sandwiches occupied the space for many years before being reconcepted into "TJ's Subs."  Later, the short-lived  "David's Gourmet" occupied the space before Pita's Republic opened in 2010

A new four-story, sixty-seven guest room La Quinta Inn & Suites is planned off N. Lee Street in Forsyth.  The new hotel was recently approved for a three year tax freeze by Monroe county commissioners. The hotel will likely open sometime in the first half of next year.
