Kale Me Crazy plans to open its ninth location later this spring at The Avenue East Cobb.   The juice joint chain, which was started by Yogli Mogli founder Roi Shlomo in 2013 in Inman Park, has now expanded across Atlanta and is offering franchises nationwide.

A new Ashley Furniture HomeStore is expected to open in place of a former Staples store in Snellville Pavilion on Scenic Highway in Snellville.  The approximately 24,000 square foot space will be renovated in the coming weeks with plans for the furniture retailer to open later this year.

Bonefish Grill plans to open their new Cumberland area restaurant Thursday, February 2nd at Akers Mill Square.  I first reported plans for the new restaurant in early 2015, but construction did not begin until last year.  A new Chuy's is expected to open adjacent to Grub Burger Bar, also in Akers Mill, in late February.

Magnolia Room Cafeteria updated its Facebook fans and members of its email list earlier this week with an update on its progress.   Although the restaurant is still "about ten days from opening," they will be hosting a "sneak peek" this weekend.  Although there is no mention of food being served, the restaurant's waitresses will be on hand to answer questions and eager patrons will have an opportunity to tour the new facility.  The “Sneak Peeks” will be held this Saturday and Sunday, January 21st and 22nd, from 1pm-4pm each day.

Young Chefs Academy has closed its location in Toco Hills and expects to reopen in Howell Mill Village late this month or early next month.  The location was previously known as "North Druid Hills," but has adopted "Atlanta Midtown" for its designation in its new home.  The new Young Chefs will open adjacent to another business that recently relocated: Flying Biscuit Cafe.

Deanna Anderson, President of The Junior League of Atlanta, was kind enough to call me yesterday and clarify the reasoning behind the decision to close the organization's Nearly New Shop.  Anderson stressed how appreciative the organization was to its patrons and donors who traveled with them to their various locations around Atlanta.  Anderson said that despite my and many others' assumption that rent increases at Toco Hills were to blame for their decision to close, the store's future had been in doubt in recent years.   In recent years, the Nearly New Shop witnessed not only competition from brick & mortar thrift stores but also competition from an unlikely source: Facebook.  Anderson mentioned one group specifically, "Buckhead Exchange," a private Facebook group made up of largely female members, which serves as a local marketplace for buying and selling new and gently used items.  The Junior League also experienced a change in membership which made staffing the shop difficult at times.  In the end, after careful consideration and much thought, Anderson and her team arrived at the conclusion that Nearly New was no longer a "sustainable fundraising model." Going forward, the organization plans to take part in "more dynamic fundraising opportunities" with plans to continue to help the community for another 100 years.   As I noted yesterday, the organization recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, but the store is a mere 68 years young.  Prior to relocating to Toco Hills, Nearly New was  in Howell Mill Square and before that in Lindbergh (fka Broadview) Plaza.  Although I'm not old enough to remember, locals tell me that Nearly New previously operated  from locations on 10th Street near Peachtree in the late 50s, and Peachtree Road near West Paces Ferry in the late 60s.

The new Chipotle Mexican Grill coming to the corner of Lawrenceville Highway and Hugh Howell Road in Tucker plans to open Thursday, February 2nd.

755 Restaurant Corporation, the franchise group owned by Hank and Billye Aaron, is planning what will be their 26th Popeyes location.  Located in the 1400 block of Georgia Highway 34 in Newnan, the new Popeyes will come on the heels of the upcoming opening of the group's 25th location, which is expected to start construction in the coming days on Georgia Highway 27 in Carrollton.   More on both of these opening can be found soon on The Newnan Menu and The Carrollton Menu respectively.

BCBGMAXAZRIA announced yesterday it plans to  restructure and close stores amidst mounting competition.  “In order to remain viable, the company -- like so many others in its industry -- must realign its business to effectively compete in today’s shopping environment,” spokesperson Seth Lubove said. "BCBG is a world-class designer and producer of apparel, which with the necessary changes, should be able to be successful." The women's fashion retailer operates 570 stores worldwide including about 175 domestically.  In Atlanta the chain operates stores in Lenox Square, Perimeter Mall and Avalon in Alpharetta, among others.   The BCBG Maz Azria Group also owns  Hervé Léger, a brand it acquired in 1998 and relaunched in 2007.  Locally, there is one Hervé Léger store in Phipps Plaza which opened in 2015, after relocating from Lenox Square.  It's unclear if the Hervé Léger brand will be affected by the restructuring and store closings.

A new Hardee's is planned for the corner of Jimmy Dyes Parkway and Wrightsboro Road in Augusta.

Madre + Mason has closed.  The restaurant, which opened in late 2015, had been listed for sale by The Shumacher Group.  The restaurant reportedly quietly closed Wednesday, a day after my post announcing that it was for sale.

Chicken Salad Chick to Nest in Former Buckhead BBQ Joint

On the heels of yesterday's closure of 521 Kitchen & Que on Roswell Road in north Buckhead, I have now confirmed that Chicken Salad Chick will open in its place.

Opened in late 2014, 521 replaced Tin Drum Asiacafe (now Tin Drum Asian Kitchen), which had replaced Doc Greens Gourmet Salads.  Early last month, I revealed that the owners of 521, Drew and Roma Kirkland, had put the business up for sale (The restaurant's name related to the Kirkland's anniversary).  Yesterday, the restaurant distributed an update to members of its email list where they announced the business had sold:

Dear 521 Customers,

It is with bittersweet emotions, that we announce we have sold the business in North Buckhead and today's lunch was our last day of service.  We had an opportunity at the right time that just could not be passed up!

It has been a pleasure to serve our loyal customers and to share the passion we have for quality foods. We look forward to being a part of all of your dining experiences again soon.  Stay tuned for Chef Drew Kirkland's next ventures.

Sincerely, 521 Kitchen & Que

An existing franchise group of Auburn, AL based Chicken Salad Chick plans to open in the former 521 space later this Spring, marking the chain's first ITP location.  Chicken Salad Chick was started in 2008 by Stacy and her late husband Kevin Brownand currently has over 60 locations open with over 100 more "in development."

In Georgia, the chain operates about a dozen locations in such communities as Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Kennesaw, Peachtree City and Athens, among others.

Chicken Salad Chick's menu features 15 original chicken salad flavors, as well as gourmet soups, flavorful side salads and freshly-baked desserts.

As a company, Chicken Salad Chick restaurants primarily serve lunch and dinner and are closed on Sunday.

In 2015, Atlanta-based private equity firm Eagle Merchant Partners made an equity investment in Chicken Salad Chick. As a result of the deal, restaurant industry veteran Russ Umphenour became chairman of the board and Scott Deviney president and CEO of Chicken Salad Chick.   Umphenour and Deviney each have deep ties to Atlanta.   Umphenour was  CEO of Focus Brands (2008-2014) and before that, founder and CEO of RTM Restaurant Group, an Arby's franchisee with nearly 800 locations.  According to Umphenour's LinkedIn profile, he is also currently CEO of Atlanta-based Stevi B's Pizza Buffet and Managing Partner of 15C, LLC, a franchisee of Shane's Rib Shack restaurants in Georgia.  Deviney is the former CEO of SDZ, an Atlanta-based multi-unit Wendy's franchisee, and senior vice president with SunTrust Bank specializing in the restaurant industry.

Next Thursday, January 26th, Chicken Salad Chick will celebrate "Customer Appreciation Day" by offering one complimentary scoop of "Classic Carol" to all customers who visit their restaurants.

Are you excited for Chicken Salad Chick to be opening in Buckhead?  Have you been to Chicken Salad Chick before? If so, where?  What metro community should Chicken Salad Chick open in next?

Cry Wolf No More: Wolf Camera Shutters Final Stores

Final two Wolf Camera stores shutter

The last two remaining Wolf Camera stores closed earlier this week after struggling to remain relevant in a changing retail environment.  The two stores were once part of the Wolf / Ritz Camera company and were the only two that had remained in business following the company's 2012 bankruptcy.

The stores, located in Buckhead and Homewood, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, reportedly closed on Monday and Friday respectively without fanfare or liquidation sales according to sources.

The company distributed the following email to customers informing them of the closures and offering incentives for their online patronage:

Dear valued customer,

We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to you, our valued customer, for your support over the years at Wolf Camera & Image. In the past couple years, we’ve seen our online divisions, RitzCamera.com and RitzPix.com flourish, while our local stores in Homewood and Atlanta have struggled.

While it is with heavy hearts that we close these stores, we hope you will continue to experience great savings and service from our online divisions.

As our way of saying, “Thank You for your support,” please enjoy this exclusive promo code: WOLFLUV which can be used at checkout on RitzCamera.com for 10% savings.

We hope you will also check out our online imaging center at RitzPix.com!

Michael Roth, Managing Director for Ritz Camera told The Homewood Staryesterday that while the Homewood store "performed above average for its industry, the overall outlook for brick-and-mortar camera stores is not optimistic."  I was unable to find any current information on the health of the Buckhead store, but sources say it was targeted by criminals at least four times over the past few years including one break-in last year where a Dodge RAM truck was used to gain entry into the store.

Suffice it to say, the rash of break-ins paired with the rise of online shopping and advanced smart phone cameras, made the days of brick and mortar camera retailers numbered.  Wolf's Buckhead closure comes on the heels of the recent announcement that Showcase Photo & Video would be shuttering their Atlanta shop after 40 years in business.

Chuck Wolf's Photo Design Bar, a new business the Wolf Camera founder opened in north Buckhead in early 2014, remains in business.

The Homewood Wolf Camera, on 18th Street South, had about four years left on a five year lease but opted to buy out its lease early and close.  The property, located near the intersection of 18th Street and 28th Avenue was acquired, along with two other properties last month by a developer who plans to build new retail and restaurant properties as well as a large parking deck in their place.

The Buckhead Wolf Camera, located on Piedmont Road, about a block off of Peachtree, occupied a freestanding, 4,800 square foot building.  The property could be appealing as a restaurant but its ample parking is currently used (by agreement) as overflow parking for adjacent eatery, Red Pepper Taqueria in the evenings.

What would you like to see open in place of Wolf Camera in Buckhead?  Are you surprised Wolf Camera stayed in business as long as it did?  Have you become a patron of Chuck Wolf's Photo Design Bar?

Nancy's Bringing Chicago-Style Pizza Back to Buckhead

Deep dish pizza coming back to Buckhead

Nancy's Pizza, the popular Chicago-style pizza joint, plans to return to Buckhead later this year.  A franchise of the Chicago based business previously operated in Buckhead before closing in 2015.  The restaurant, located in the "Buckhead Exchange" shopping center at the corner of Grandview Avenue and Peachtree Road, closed in mid 2015 after which it "relocated" to Camp Creek Marketplace in East Point.  The restaurant had been in business about a decade.

The new Buckhead Nancy's Pizza will be located in Buckhead Crossing shopping center near the corner of Piedmont Road and Sidney Marcus Boulevard.  The restaurant will occupy suite 44, a 4,500 square foot restaurant space to the right of Marshalls.  The space had been "Grand Buffet," a Chinese buffet restaurant, but has been vacant for months.

Signage on the space indicates permits with the City of Atlanta were filed earlier this month to begin renovations.  Also on the permits is  the word "Nightclub" as it related to the "project's occupancy group."

A source tells me the business plans to be open sometime this spring.

In addition to the East Point and upcoming Buckhead location, Nancy's continues to operate in midtown on Ponce de Leon Avenue near Mary Mac's Tea Room.

Are you excited to be getting Nancy's back in Buckhead?  What is your favorite place for pizza in Atlanta?  What is your favorite "style" of pizza?

Metro Atlanta's newest Burger 21 restaurant plans to open Monday February 6th in Kennesaw Marketplace.  The Tampa based chain has existing Atlanta area locations in Kennesaw, Buckhead and Buford by the Mall of Georgia.  A Snellville location "temporarily closed"this past August after three months in business, but has yet to reopen.  The new Kennesaw unit sports a new logo for the brand and two Coca-Cola Freestyle units.

Budi's Sushi recently opened in the former Bento Hut in the shops at the Pencil Factory Lofts on Decatur Street downtown. As the name suggests, the eatery specializes in sushi, but it also features assorted other Asian fare. The space was previously home to Chow Bing, which continues to operate its popular Buckhead location.

Cook Out is now open on Cobb Parkway across from the Big Chicken.  The North Carolina based chain now has over 20 locations open in Georgia with new restaurants planned for Warner Robins, Winder and Macon.

The Big Chicken in Marietta closed earlier this week for what the franchise owner anticipates will be a twelve-week renovation.  Plans include added a screened-in outdoor patio, gift shop and the latest KFC branding.   The restaurant was built in 1956 as part of Johnny Reb's Chick, Chuck and Shake. The "Big Chicken" was added to the restaurant in 1963, and was fabricated by Atlantic Steel, the steel mill located where Atlantic Station is today.  The restaurant changed hands in the mid 70s at which time it became a KFC franchise.

Rodney's Jamaican Soul Food has reopened in their new location on Cobb Parkway.  The Jamaican eatery, which celebrated its seventh anniversary earlier last year, relocated from a space near the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Windy Hill to the former D. Geller & Son in Cumberland Square North shopping center.

Metro Atlanta's second Rockler store opened this past Saturday at Town Center Plaza in Kennesaw.  The woodworking retailer has an existing store on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs in Sandy Springs Plaza.  The new store will celebrate its Grand Opening next Saturday, February 4th.

The new Local Republic restaurant opened this past Monday on North Perry Street in downtown Lawrenceville.  I first wrote about the planed relocation in August 2015 with renovations of the two level restaurant having taken longer than expected.

Papi's Cuban & Caribbean Grill plans to open their new restaurant at Emory Point on Monday January 30th.  The new Papi's is the chain's seventh, joining locations in Tucker, Midtown, Stockbridge, Kennesaw, Lawrenceville and at Concourse T of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.  The Emory Point location replaces the former Bonefish Grill.

Chow Baby, which opened this past October in a street level space at Alpharetta Lofts on Canton Street in Alpharetta, has closed.  The restaurant, which celebrated its Grand Opening in early November, quietly closed sometime last month. Given its short life, it's unfortunately safe to say the restaurant was "coming soon" for longer than it was open.

Abercrombie & Fitch plans to soon begin a significant renovation of its Lenox Square store. The renovation, which permits filed with the City of Atlanta reflect will run nearly $2 million, follow sibling concept Hollister's renovation at Lenox last year. Industry sources indicate the Lenox Square store will be among the first in the company to receive the new look.  This will mark the most significant renovation of the store since it relocated to the former FAO Schwarz from Phipps Plaza over ten years ago.

Also at Lenox Square, Sweet Hut Bakery & Cafe plans to open a new 436 square foot location in the Fashion Cafe in April.  The new shop will open in the former at&t shop space that had most recently housed an independent sock retailer.  Sweet Hut has existing locations in Doraville, Midtown and Duluth, and has upcoming locations in Kennesaw and Plano, TX.

The owners of Sweet Hut also plans to open a new restaurant, Food Terminal, later this year in Doraville.  The new Asian eatery will occupy its own building in the City Farmers Market shopping center.

Roll It Up Ice Cream, yet another "rolled ice cream" business, plans to open in Asian Square, home to the original Sweet Hut.

Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans to open their ninth Georgia restaurant February 23rd in West Cobb. The new restaurant will open in a newly constructed freestanding building in the new Parkside West Cobb shopping center.  The center, anchored by Sprouts Farmers Market (which opened today), is located on Dallas Highway, adjacent to the Avenue West Cobb.

Tafa's restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant located on Magnolia Street in Roswell, announced earlier this week via its Facebook page that it plans to close this coming Saturday, January 28th.

Frontgate plans to relocate and expand its Phipps Plaza store.  The home furnishings and gift retailer currently occupies a second floor space of about 10,600 square feet. (The space was for many years The Peasant Uptown.) Frontgate plans to relocate later this fall to a new 19,615 square foot space in the Nordstrom wing. The new store will reportedly encompass the former Coldwater Creek, Ross-Simon, Barami and as well as Vera Bradley, which plans to close this weekend.

Greeting card, stationary and related products retailer Papyrus plans to open a new 1,242 square foot store on the first floor of Phipps Plaza later this spring.  The space, previously home to retailer K-la, will  be in addition to the company's existing store on the second floor of Lenox Square near Bloomingdale's.

Bella's Best, born as an online venture in 2006 and later expanded to a brick and mortar location on Bennett Street in 2015, is coming back!  The Bennett Street location closed early last year with plans to reopen in East Cobb a short time later.  The East Cobb relocation never happened and instead the owners opted to relocate elsewhere intown.  Renovations to their new organic bakery cafe space are wrapping up and I'm told the restaurant should be open "in a couple weeks." The Bella's Best will replace what was previously Flora Dora, a home decor shop, on Cheshire Bridge Road.  The freestanding yellow building sits at 1830 Cheshire Bridge Road, between Las Margaritas and Nakato.  In addition to the food component, the new space will serve as an art gallery, catering operation and event space.

Jerusalem Bakery has officially moved to their new location in Marietta.  Previously located at 585 Franklin Road, the Mediterranean restaurant and bakery relocated to a larger space at 1175 Franklin Gateway last week.  The new space was previously various auto businesses but was completely renovated to serve as the restaurant's new home. About a mile separates the new and the old locations with the new training complex for the Atlanta United FC  situated on Franklin Road between the two.

Yesterday's News: Shula's 347 Grill seems to have very quietly closed on Lenox Road in Buckhead.  The closure reportedly happened over five months ago but seems to have gone unnoticed by many.  The restaurant opened in 2009 in what was then the newly christened Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center.  The boring lenox road bar & grill is now the onsite restaurant.

Bojangles' Bringing Biscuits to Former Burger King in Duluth

Bojangles' to open in Duluth

Charlotte, N.C. based Bojangles' plans to open a new restaurant in Duluth later this year.  The "new" restaurant will open in place of a onetime Burger King restaurant at 3625 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, just south of Pleasant Hill Road.  The restaurant is located across the street from a former Donatos Pizza turned Duluth Diner.

The Burger King opened in 2001 but has reportedly been vacant since late 2015.  Plans call for the existing roughly 4,000 square foot building to be "deconstructed" and rebuilt as a Bojangles'.  The former Burger King featured a kids play area (since removed) that makes the building larger than a typical Bojangles'.

I contacted a Bojangles' PR representative in Charlotte who was unable to confirm an expected opening timeline but did confirm the restaurant will be a corporate location.  Bojangles' unveiled a new prototypeearlier this month in Greenville, S.C. which features a "Biscuit Theater"that showcases fresh biscuits being made every 20 minutes among other additions.  The new restaurant also offers guests free Wi-Fi and promotes the brand's proud history.  The Duluth restaurant is likely to incorporate at least some of the new design elements.

Bojangles' was started by business partners Jack Fulk and Richard Thomas in 1977The duo grew the company to 350 locations before both stepping down in 1985.  Fulk continued to be involved in the company as a franchisee.  Thomas however fled fast food for healthier fare and opened R. Thomas Deluxe Grill in Atlanta in 1985.  Fulk died in 2011 at the age of 78, and Thomas died yesterday at the age of 82.

Bojangles'hired industry veteran Clifton Rutledge as the company's new CEO in early 2014.  The following year the company went public (NASDAQ: BOJA) after which The Charlotte Observerinterviewed Rutledge about the company's growth plans.

“One store by itself in a city the size of St. Louis or Dallas ... is going to get lost, and that’s why Atlanta has been so successful. That’s our largest growth market this year,” Rutledge says, adding that Atlanta is the “poster child” of what it looks like to grow into adjacent markets.

The greater metro Atlanta area has seen tremendous growth since I wrote about the chain's glaring absence from metro Atlanta in 2012Over the past year or so, new Bojangles' restaurants have recently opened in Cumming, Doraville, Kennesaw andMarietta, among other cities with new locations planned for Fayetteville and eventually, Chamblee.  The Chamblee restaurant, planned for the intersection of Clairmont Road and Buford Highway, is reportedly still happening but is not expected to open until late this year.

Today, the company has over 700 locations.

Are you excited for the opening of Bojangles' in Duluth?  Are you eagerly awaiting the opening of Bojangles' in Chamblee like I am?  Do you think R. Thomas will be able to maintain its popularity following the passing of Mr. Thomas?

Hudson Grille Scores "Famous" Space in Toco Hills

Hudson Grille opening eighth location.

Atlanta based Metrotainment Cafes plans to bring their Hudson Grille concept to Toco Hills shopping center later this year.  Hudson Grille, which bills itself as "Atlanta's best sports bar," will take over the former Famous Pub, which closed last month after 30 years in business.

I spoke to Metrotainent Cafes' CEO Jeff Landau earlier today who confirmed that a lease has been signed on the approximately 9,000 square foot space at Toco Hills and that he hopes to be open in time for NFL season in early September.  The 2017 season will begin with the Kickoff Game on September 7th.

The new Hudson Grille will join locations in Tucker, Midtown, Brookhaven, Kennesaw, Sandy Springs, downtown and Alpharetta. Having renovated former restaurants many times before, Landau expects the work at Toco Hills to be more challenging due to the age of the infrastructure.

Metrotainment is in the process of renovating the former Pub 71 in Brookhaven to become Hudson FC - International Sports Pub.  Landau hopes to have the soccer themed restaurant open in time for the 2017 MLS season which begins March 3rd.

Hudson Grille is the second new restaurant to join Toco Hills following its 2015 purchase by Columbia S.C. based Edens. Spiller Park Coffee, the upscale coffee shop from acclaimed chef Hugh Acheson, previously committed to open in the center.

The neighborhood seems split on how they feel about all the changes at Toco Hills.  While improvments have been made to the center, a number of longstanding tenants have already closed with others contemplating closure or relocation.

Are you excited for the opening of Hudson Grille at Toco Hills?  What else would you like to see open at Toco Hills?  Who do you think will be next to close or announce a relocation at Toco Hills?

Magnolia Room Cafeteria Expects to Open Next Week

Magnolia Room plans to open Tuesday.

The wait is finally over!  Barring any crazy mishaps, Magnolia Room Cafeteria expects to "soft open" this upcoming Tuesday, January 31st.  The restaurant, which represents the reincarnation of sorts of the beloved Tucker S&S Cafeteria, has been delayed a number of times as the owner worked to rectify issues and perfect the restaurant and its menu.

"Mr. Louis," the restaurant's owner, is thankful for the support and patience of the neighborhood, the staff and the City of Tucker for their patience over the past few months.

The restaurant is located in the City of Tucker, on Hugh Howell Road, in the Shops at Heritage Place shopping center.

An official announcement came earlier today that the restaurant will host a "preview week" next week.

"Our final health and building inspections are on Monday January 30th, so tentatively our doors will OPEN on TUESDAY January 31st. We intend to be very close to the full variety you expect from us, but please understand we want to be CERTAIN every dish is perfect. So please understand if your favorite is not yet on our menu.

Preview Week Serving Hours: Lunch 11-2 Dinner 4:30-7:30"

Although I have toured the restaurant and witnessed the themed Magnolia artwork, custom tables and new layout, Mr. Louis has asked that I not share any interior photos until opening day.

The menu is complete and I can share with you that for $8.50, patrons will be able to select an entree, two sides, bread and a beverage (excluding milk) for only $8.50.

This past October, Tucker residents got their first taste of the menu at Magnolia Room with a number of options at Taste of Tucker.  Magnolia Room was by far the most popular restaurant at the event, selling over 500 "tastes." The crowd favorite and my personal favorite was the "baked eggplant," a feature of the restaurant's menu. Other upgrades include Rainbow Trout Almondine and Black Angus Chopped Sirloin Steak.  Similar to the S&S, not all menu items will be available every day.

Are you excited for the new Magnolia Room Cafeteria to open?  What menu item are you most looking forward to? How many times have you stopped by the restaurant inquiring about when it would open? (You can remain anonymous)

Poké Perfect Planning Peach State Penetration

Poké Perfect planning three metro locations.

Poké Perfect plans to open the first of three Atlanta area locations in Decatur later this spring.  The new restaurant will open in place of the beloved The Yogurt Tap, a locally owned frozen yogurt shop which closed this past November after just over six years in business.  The roughly 1,200 square foot space is located on Church Street, across from the square in downtown Decatur.

With U.S. headquarters in Atlanta, Poké Perfect has one location open in their European headquarters of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with a second coming soon to the city of Utrecht.

Restaurant veteran Hunter Satterwhite is opening the restaurants in Georgia.  A native of Lake Gaston, a small community near the North Carolina-Virginia border, Satterwhite opened Treylor Park, a southern fusion restaurant, in Savannah in 2014.  Last year he sold his stake in the restaurant to plan Poké Perfect.  In addition to being co-owner and Executive Chef at Treylor Park, Satterwhite's chef credentials also include time as Chef de partie at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.

Poké, a traditional Hawaiian dish, is essentially deconstructed sushi, served in a bowl.  In addition to traditional offerings such as tuna and salmon, Poké Perfect will also feature smoked chicken, tofu and shrimp.  The restaurant will also feature lobster as an entree option in a sort of deconstructed lobster roll.  The restaurant will also offer sushirrito (sushi burrito).

Beverage options are expected to include beer, wine and sake as well as Mexican Coke and Boxed Water, among other offerings.

Poké Perfect plans to offer two bowl sizes: regular and large, with prices expected to range from $9-$12.
Planned signage for the restaurant's exterior
In an interview this past weekend, Satterwhite indicated that his original restaurant in the Netherlands, which opened this past October, recently set a worldwide record on UberEATS with 174 bowls sold via the platform over a two hour period. Satterwhite plans to offer delivery in Atlanta via the UberEATS platform, as well as select additional partners.

Following the expected April debut of Poké Perfect in Decatur, Satterwhite plans to open additional locations on the Westside and in Inman Park near the BeltLine before the end of the year.  After the three Atlanta area locations open, plans call for the chain to continue its corporate, non-franchise expansion into surrounding southeastern cities.

With their existing store in the Netherlands and Atlanta and others in the pipeline, Satterwhite feels Poké Perfect will be the first international Poké restaurant.

In Atlanta, Poké Perfect joins a growing group of poké purveyors.  Fish BowlPoké, which claims to be "Atlanta's first poké restaurant," opened this past summer on Broad Street downtown. Poké Bar opened last fall in Sandy Springs with plans to add additional locations in Alpharetta and "Atlanta."  Boruboru Sushi also opened this past fall at Emory Point, across from the CDC.  Most recently, Budi's Sushi opened at the Pencil Factory Lofts on Decatur Street earlier this month offering sushi and poké as well as other Asian dishes.  Various other restaurants have added poké to their menus, but few offer the variety of the aforementioned eateries.  With their existing store in the Netherlands and Atlanta in the pipeline, Satterwhite feels Poké Perfect will be the first international Poké restaurant.

Despite the competition, Satterwhite feels the more people are aware of poké, the better off all operators will be.

Are you excited for the opening of Poké Perfect in Decatur?  Where is your favorite place to get poké in Atlanta?  Where would you like to see Poké Perfect open next?

Persistent Parking Problems Plagued Pieology in Alpharetta

Pizza joint falls flat in Alpharetta
Pieology Pizzeria, the Santa Margarita, California based quick serve pizza chain which entered the metro Atlanta market last fall with a location in Alpharetta, has closed.  The restaurant, located in a 2,800 square foot space in The Atwater on Old Milton Parkway, opened in late October and closed Sunday night.  The Atwater is a small strip center across from Avalon, which also features Firebirds Wood Fire Grill, Southern Baked Pie Co., Bezoria, and Starbucks, among other tenants.

I visited the center last night and spoke with Joshua McBride, Vice President, Development at Segovia Aslan Enterprises, the firm that has the franchise rights to Georgia and other states in the southeast.  McBride, a ten year Chick-fil-A veteran, lamented that the closure was not something they wanted to do and that the company is "committed to Alpharetta." Although the restaurant was well received, it became apparent that parking, access and street signage were hurdles too significant to overcome.

Pieology's corporate office provided me the following statement earlier this afternoon in response to the closure:

"Pieology restaurant at 2685 Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta, Georgia has closed effective January 30, 2017.  This in no way reflects our commitment to this market but rather an opportunity to better reassess a more robust location to be able to take advantage of the dining behavior of the clientele in this area.  This is only the first such store in our Pieology chain to reevaluate its location and we look forward to conducting our due diligence in a timely manner."

Firebirds, the center's largest tenant at nearly 6,600 square feet, draws the largest crowds and offers valet parking onsite.  With an already limited number of spaces, the amount taken by Firebirds on one side of Pieology and Starbucks on the other, made it very difficult for customers to find parking.  While Starbucks does have a drive-thru, as is the case at many coffee shops, onsite patrons tend to stick around for hours on end, using the shop as their impromptu work station.

In addition to the limited parking, the street-side pylon signage only had room to feature four tenants, of which Pieology was not one.  Even if you did see the restaurant, its location across from Avalon with no signaled intersection made it a challenge to access unless you were on the right side of the road.  Although some may think parking is exclusively an "ITP" problem, this center proves otherwise.

I could find only one other Pieology to have closed, which was in Draper, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City.    (By comparison, Atlanta based Uncle Maddio's has shuttered over fifteen locations in recent years.)

Launched in 2011, Pieology is widely regarded as "best in class" when it comes to quick serve pizza operators.

Last year, Technomic, a restaurant industry research firm, released its Top 500 Chain Restaurant Report which tracks year-over-year sales growth.  Three of the five best performers were quick serve pizza operators, led by Blaze Pizza with 205% YOY sales growth.  MOD Pizza was second (up 131%) and Pieology Pizzeria was fourth (up 67%).

I announced last year that Pieology had plans to open in both Decatur Crossing in Decatur as well as The Plaza at City Springs in Sandy Springs, but both of those locations are off the table as Segovia Aslan hits the pause button on their Atlanta expansion. (McBride did say that Pieology would love to be back in Alpharetta should a better location be found.) Segovia continues to operate a total of eleven Pieology locations in the southeast, with a twelfth coming soon to Charlotte.

Other pizza players are planning Atlanta openings, while others reconsider expansion.

Blaze Pizza recently confirmed its plans to enter the Atlanta market with a restaurant at North Decatur and Clairmont Roads in Emory Commons.

MOD Pizza is reportedly close to signing two leases in metro Atlanta but has nothing open or confirmed yet.

Pie Five Pizza Co., which entered the Georgia market in 2015 with locations in McDonough and Newnan, had previously announced four new locations in metro Atlanta, all of which have since been removed from their website.  The four  "would-be" locations were for sites in Chamblee, Roswell, Kennesaw and Duluth.  The Kennesaw and Duluth locations were both within Fuqua Development projects and are actively being "shopped" to other tenants.

This past fall, I broke news that Ohio based PizzaFire plans to enter the Atlanta market with a location in Brookhaven, followed by a location in Roswell.

Are you surprised Pieology felt forced to close in Alpharetta?  Do you think parking is becoming as big of a problem OTP as it is ITP? If Pieology were to reopen elsewhere in Alpharetta, where do think they could do well?

Smoothie King plans to open later this spring on Holcomb Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners.  The smoothie shop will open in the freestanding building that most recently housed Guthrie's, a fried chicken joint, and before that was built as a Donatos Pizza.  The Metairie, Louisiana based chain has been growing its Atlanta presence in recent years adding locations both ITP and OTP.  The chain is no stranger to converting old restaurants and even old camera stores.  Smoothie King opened a new location in a former Checkers in 2013 and operates out of former Fox Photo shops in Northlake and Snellville.  The one constant in all the building conversions has been a drive-thru, something Smoothie King feels is very important in new locations.

The Krystal that closed for "remolding" on Cobb Parkway in Marietta was demolished and is being rebuilt.  A company spokesperson told me the restaurant is expected to reopen in late March.

Metro Atlanta's newest Culver's opened this past Monday in Canton/Hickory Flat.  The new restaurant is located on Hickory Flat Highway, near Kroger, and is the Wisconsin-based chain's sixth in the greater metro Atlanta area.

Cook Out is coming to South Cobb Drive after all.  Plans call for the North Carolina based burger chain to renovate the former Krystal across from Cobb Center. The new restaurant joins the newly opened Cook Out on Cobb Parkway across from the Big Chicken.

Lucid FC, a lifestyle clothing brand started by Atlanta twins Chet and Betts DeHart, plans to open their first brick and mortar store at Andrews Square in Buckhead.  The 983 square foot store will open in suite 220, on the second level of the Buckhead shopping center, according to the center's site plan.  The twins, graduates of my alma mater, The Ben Franklin Academy, are the sons of Jeff DeHart, partner at commercial real estate firm S.J. Collins Enterprises.

Ethan Allen is coming back to Buckhead at Lenox Marketplace.  According to the site plan for the Edens owned shopping center, Ethan Allen will occupy the 12,000 square foot former Staples space.  The prime Peachtree Road facing space has been vacant since the office supply chain closed in late 2014.  Ethan Allen's previous location in the Sports Authority shopping center, closed over five years ago and is today Modani, another furniture retailer.  Interestingly, despite not having a presence in Buckhead, the furniture retailer introduced a "Buckhead" collection last year, "a nod to Atlanta’s posh suburb."

A new Panera Bread is planned for Cherokee Street and Lewis Drive, across from Kennestone Regional Medical Center, in Marietta.  The new eatery and adjoining "retail" space will replace Kennestone Medical Building, an older lowrise medical complex.  A source close to the development indicated to me that demolition is will begin in March and that Panera should be open by the end of July.

After months of renovations, more than enough delays and plenty of drop-ins from eager customers, Magnolia Room Cafeteria is now open in Tucker.  The restaurant, which represents a "relocation" of sorts of the beloved S&S Cafeteria, opened for lunch and dinner service yesterday.  The restaurant is located in The Shops at Heritage Place on Hugh Howell Road.

Metro Atlanta's newest QuikTrip is now open at 1590 Mansell Road in Alpharetta.  The new "Gen 3" convenience store and gas station is not far from a recently renovated RaceTrac.

The Pro Cleaners, located at the intersection of Oak Grove and LaVista Roads in Oak Grove announced recently it will close effective February 11th.  The dry cleaners has been a popular neighborhood business for many years.  Before becoming a dry cleaners, the building was a liquor store.  The liquor store's owner was robbed and murdered in a still unsolved murder nearly 20 years ago.  Before that, the property was a service station.  There is no definitive word on what it will become next.

Dicks Sporting Goods plans to open in place of the former Sports Authority at Akers Mill Square near Cumberland Mall. The sporting goods retailer won the rights to open in the former Sports Authority stores in Sandy Springs and Akers Mill, but is reportedly having some trouble getting its plans at Akers Mill approved. Multiple phone calls and emails to the company's media relations department have gone unanswered over the past two months.  I would think it's rather easy to replace one sporting goods retailer with another, but perhaps they are proposing some substantial structural changes that are slowing the process? Who knows?

New eatery planned for former Madre & Mason

Paul Nair of Savi Provisions has leased the 3,700 square foot former Madre & Mason restaurant on Dutch Valley Road in the bottom of the Belvedere condos and plans to open a new Indian eatery in its place later this month.  The new restaurant, JAI HO Indian Kitchen & Bar, will be open seven days a week including weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Steve Josovitz of The Shumacher Group represented the seller in the transaction.  Prior to Madre & Mason the restaurant operated as a Mediterranean restaurant called Couscous and before that, an Italian eatery called Allegro.

From Wikipedia:
"Jai ho" (Hindi: जय हो), also transliterated "Jay ho", is a Nepali and Hindi phrase which can be roughly translated as "Let [the] victory prevail", "Let there be victory", or "May there always be victory". Particularly, in Nepali, it means "Let victory be yours"

Anish Nair (not Paul's brother, but related), Savi's corporate Executive Chef will partner with Paul in the opening of Jai Ho.

Paul, who has a culinary degree, has 30 years of experience in retail, wine and food.  Paul's Savi Provisions (formerly Savi Urban Market) has grown from one location in Inman Park to also include markets in Midtown, Brookhaven and Buckhead.  Anish, who also has a culinary degree, has close to 20 years of experience and reportedly won an annual Iron Chef competition on Hilton Head Island.

Vijeesh Parayil will serve as the restaurant's Executive Chef and reportedly previously worked as a chef at "one of the top Indian restaurants in New York," according to Anish  The restaurant will feature an "Indian Fusion" menu and will be presented in an "upscale, casual and hip" environment.

In additionto Jai Ho's Indian Fusion menu, Anish says the restaurant will  feature "New American" offerings as well as classic brunch options like omelets, a carving station mimosas and Bloody Marys.

Are you excited for the opening of Jai Ho?  What is your favorite place for Indian cuisine in Atlanta?  Do you think an Indian eatery will find success in this previously cursed space?

UPDATE: 365 BY Whole Foods Market Renderings Revealed

New grocer to debut in 2018.

Last summer, I broke news to the city that a new 365 by Whole Foods Market would open in Paces Ferry Plaza in Buckhead.  In case you missed it, or have been under a rock, or have been reading some other site, 365 by Whole Foods Market is essentially the "Nordstrom Rack" of Whole Foods Market.  The store is smaller, and "cheaper" and is designed to appeal to millennial customers.  The store is "cheaper" due the fact that much of what is stocked is the company's house-brand: 365.

Given the excitement, anxiety and questions that followed my original post, I'm pleased to say I can finally share renderings of the renovated center, with updates on how the changes will affect existing tenants and parking.

Given the recent closures of Glyn Weakley Interiors, Bean Head Toys and Caribou Coffee, it became clear their parcel within the center would play a vital role in welcoming 365 to the plaza.

The portion of the plaza the aforementioned tenants occupied will be demolished, along with the adjacent, vacant, freestanding Taco Bell.  The endcap space (formerly Paper Affair) on the center's main strip of stores will also be demolished.   In their place, Regency will construct a 29,740 square foot 365 store with a two-level parking deck below that will feature 14 foot ceilings and provide about 150 spaces, primarily for use by the grocer and valet for Blue Ridge Grill.  The parking deck will provide patrons both stair and elevator access.

Smith Ace Hardware, an existing tenant in the center, will soon shift to the far left of the center and grow in size from 5,000 to just north of 8,800 square feet.  Pero's Pizza, a popular neighborhood restaurant, will remain in its current space and will gain a few square feet according to the property's site plan.  Other existing tenants such as West Stride, an athletic footwear & apparel retailer, Carriage Cleaners and Day Spa & Nail will also shift slightly in size and location as a result of the changes at the center.

Baby Braithwaite, one of the center's newest additions, will remain the same size and in their same place while their neighbor, Woo Skincare & Cosmetics, appears to be downsizing from 4,000 square feet to just over 2,000 square feet.

Paces Ferry Plaza as it stands now

Paces Ferry Plaza as it is expected to look in 2018
I have no idea how leases were structured, or restructured, with existing tenants, but many were seemingly willing to move, downsize, and generally be flexible given what many are likely hoping will be droves of new shoppers brought to the center by 365.

Overall the center increased from 63,809 square feet to 84,542 square feet.

Demolition permits have already been filed with the City of Atlanta with work slated to begin "in the coming months."  Given all that must be done and the new parcel and accompanying parking that must be built, a source with whom I spoke indicated the plan is to have the new 365 store open late in the third quarter of 2018.

Today there are three 365 stores in Bellevue,WA, Lake Oswego, OR and Los Angeles, CA  with fifteen more coming soon, including one planned for Decatur, not counting the Buckhead store.

In each of the three existing 365 stores, the grocer partners with a quick serve restaurant partner to operate a space within the store.  In the Bellevue store, the "Featured Friend" is Wind Ginger Kitchen, a healthy fast casual Asian eatery.   In Lake Oswego, the store partnered with Next Level Burger, a quick serve eatery featuring burgers, salads, sandwiches, shakes and other offerings. In Los Angeles, 365 partnered with by CHLOE., a vegan eatery from New York that features a creative menu and is "a collaboration with" ESQUARED Hospitality.

While I am not a vegan, or a healthy eater, or even a vegetarian, I'm intrigued by the by CHLOE. menu and would love for them to be the Buckhead store's "Featured Friend" should the program continue and the Buckhead store be included.  Decisions such as that are reportedly still being ironed out but but if anyone at 365 is reading this... ANYTHING BUT ANOTHER BURGER JOINT. Please and thank you.

What are your thoughts on the changes at Paces Ferry Plaza?  Are you excited for the opening of 365 by Whole Foods Market in Buckhead?  What restaurant or type of restaurant would you like to see be the "Featured Friend" in Buckhead should there be one?

Two Dudes Are Gonna Make "Fetch" Happen
Fetch has released the first renderings of its restaurant and dog park bar concept coming to the Old Fourth Ward later this year. Fetch is the first restaurant concept by Atlanta businessman Stephen Ochs and his business partner, Garrett Reynolds. The restaurant is expected to open later this Fall and is located within walking distance of both Krog Street Market and the BeltLine.  Situated on a 1.27 acre lot at 520 Daniel Street, the business will include three separate concepts.  "In Fetch Park, the on-site dog park, a converted Airstream trailer featuring a full bar and outdoor TVs will serve beer, wine and cocktails to park visitors. The main building, Fetch Ice House, will house a restaurant and bar in an open-air, rustic setting with plenty of outdoor seating. A shipping container transformed into a full-service bar with TVs and a rooftop lounge serves as the centerpiece of the property.   Fetch will offer Wi-Fi throughout the restaurant and park area, a dog wash station and a membership option for dog owners seeking a safe, enjoyable place for theirs pets to play."

UTBAPH to be Reborn in Marietta
A franchise of Willie Jewell's Old School Bar-B-Q is planned for the former Pizza Hut in an outparcel of Sprayberry Square Shopping Center on Sandy Plains Road in Marietta. The BBQ restaurant is actively going through the permitting process with plans to renovate the nearly 2,700 square foot former pizza joint to suit their needs.  Oddly enough, Marietta resident Stephen Franklin recently opened his own BBQ joint, DAS BBQ, in a former Pizza Hut on Collier Road. Launched in 2009, Willie Jewell's is a fast casual spin-off of Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q, a Jacksonville,FL based BBQ joint that first opened in 1949, and now has multiple locations.  There is currently one Willie Jewell's open in Georgia in Martinez (Augusta) with another coming soon to Peachtree City.

Larkin on Memorial Signs Two More Tenants
Shep's Grant Park Ace Hardware and Primrose Schools are both joining the Larkin on Memorial redevelopment.  Slated to open in Grant Park later this year, the 63,000 square foot Larkin on Memorial represents the redevelopment of the Larkin Refrigeration Company and Veteran’s Radiator buildings.  Shep’s Grant Park Ace Hardware is an independently owned family Ace Hardware retailer, selling major brands such as Big Green Egg, Stihl, Yeti, Weber, Toro and Craftsman. The 5,700 square foot Larkin location will be the second in the Atlanta area for Shep’s owner Zach Stafford, who opened his first store in early 2015 at the corner of Juniper and 7th Streets in the bottom of SkyHouse South apartments.

A franchise of Acworth-based Primrose Schools will also open in the complex.  As one of the nation’s leading early childhood education and care providers, Primrose Schools provide full-day early education and child care services for children ages birth to 5 and after-school care for children ages 6-12.  In addition to Shep's and Primrose, Taqueria Del Sol, Ramen Station and Grant Park Market have previously been announced as tenants in Larkin.

The Other Shoe Has Dropped in Wake of Target's Closure in Roswell
Last month's closure of the SuperTarget in Roswell's East Village shopping center has reportedly triggered "co-tenancy" clauses in the leases of other tenants in the center.  As a result, Rack Room Shoes is planning an "early February" closure, possibly as soon as the 11th.  The center is  also home to Marshalls and Dollar Tree, both of whom claim they have no immediate plans to vacate the center. Marshalls, of course, relocated to East Village from the Plaza at Roswell shopping center when the SuperTarget center opened in 2008.  Taco Mac, Mattress Firm and Panda Express, among other businesses, also have locations in the center but it's unclear what their next move, if any, may be.  Adjacent to Marshalls is an undeveloped parcel that is apparently suitable for a "65,000 square foot anchor space." Perhaps an expanding grocer, LIDL for example, could be interested in the parcel to bring life back to the center.

Sprouts Sets Tucker Opening Plus New Tenant Additions

The new Sprouts Farmers Market coming to Tucker Meridian shopping center is slated to open April 26th.  The Tucker opening will come on the heels of the natural foods grocer's expected March 1st opening at Decatur Crossing in Decatur, and follows last month's opening at Parkside West Cobb.   In Tucker Meridian, Sprouts joins fellow anchors Dicks Sporting Goods, Ross Dress For Less, DSW and Hobby Lobby, all of which are expected to open around the same time according to sources familiar with the project.  The anchors will be joined by Coffee & Bagels (Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels), Newk's Eatery, Jimmy John's, Sport Clips, VIP Nails and of course, Mattress Firm.   New additions to the center include Nothing Bundt Cakes, Hollywood Feed, a boutique pet store serving only dog and cat owners, Mathnasium, a children's education facility and Sage Dental.

Sandy Springs center secures first group of tenants.
The Plaza at City Springs, the new center coming to Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, has leases signed with a number of quick-serve restaurants as well as a few service providers.

Atlanta-based Arris Realty Partners (formerly Ben Carter Properties) is planning the approximately 27,000 square foot retail center.   The development will be comprised of three separate buildings and about 160 surface parking spaces over 3.5 acres.  The center is "two blocks north of 285, on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs."  The complex will span Roswell Road, between Allen Road and Cliftwood Drive.  While McCullough Auto Care (A NAPA facility) at Allen Road and a Shell gas station at Cliftwood Drive will remain, everything between them has been demolished for the new development. The most significant demolition was of the American Pie (later Cocktail Cove) restaurant and bar.

The Plaza at City Springs will sit in front of The Cliftwood, a newly built, approximately 250 unit "luxury" apartment complex.  The Cliftwood is actively leasing with studio units starting at about $1,400 per month up to three bed, two bath units at nearly $2,700 per month.

The tenants in The Plaza are to include a number of expanding local, and regional chains.

Zoës Kitchen will open in a 2,800 square foot space and is the previously mentioned "Mediterranean-focused quick serve restaurant." Started in Birmingham and now based in Plano, Zoës entered the Atlanta market in 2009 and today has more than fifteen locations in the greater metro Atlanta area.  The newest Zoës in metro Atlanta include those in Kennesaw Marketplace and Sugarloaf Marketplace.  Another is coming soon to Parkside West Cobb.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe will open in a 1,600 square foot space while Tin Drum Asian Kitchen will open in a 2,000 square foot space.  Both concepts are part of the he BIP Franchise Accelerator, a division of BIP Capital, an Atlanta-based venture capital firm.  Tropical Smoothie Cafe, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, is riding the wave of renewed interest in the brand.  Tin Drum Asian Kitchen, which recently rebranded after earlier being known as Tin Drum Asiacafe, is also trying to expand again after experiencing a number of store closures and a mini brand identity crisis of sorts.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe recently opened new locations in Kennesaw and Brookhaven with another two planned for Midtown and Johns Creek.  Tin Drum recently opened its newest location in Ashley Park in Newnan.

Noire NailSage Dental and Joann Cleaners are all also confirmed tenants in the center.

A freestanding, 2,200 square foot building marked "restaurant" on the property's site plan is labeled to include a drive-thru and is reportedly going to be a Starbucks.  While I was unable to obtain confirmation of this by anyone at Arris, an employee at an existing Starbucks unit nearby indicated they will be "moving" to the new location in the coming months.  The existing location I contacted is just north of The Plaza at City Springs and operates out of a mid-century building once home to First Federal Savings, a long defunct Atlanta area bank.  If the "move" does take place, I sure hope the old bank building is saved from the wrecking ball!

Are you excited for the new additions coming to Sandy Springs?  What else would you like to see open in The Plaza at City Springs?  If in fact the Starbucks does move, what would you like to see happen to their current property?

Cock a Doodle Doo! One Rooster Mongolian Bar to Debut Soon

The wait is finally over for Chow Baby reboot.

Mike Blum, founder of The Real Chow Baby, plans to open his next eatery concept One Rooster Mongolian BarFebruary 15th, on Howell Mill Road on the Westside.  The new restaurant will open in the same space where Blum first opened Chow Baby in 2005.

After Blum's departure from the brand, Chow Baby subsequently expanded to locations on Ponce de Leon Avenue, the Mall of Georgia and most recently, Alpharetta, but all have since closed.  The Alpharetta location, which opened this past October, was closed before the end of the year.  The Real Chow Baby at the Cobb Galleria Centre opened in 2008 and was rebranded by Blum as Big Chow Grill in 2010.  Big Chow Grill is still in operation today, but Blum is no longer involved.

Blum, who sold Chow Baby in 2006 but remained company president until 2009, seized the opportunity to return to his original space when the restaurant's lease was not renewed in 2014.

One Rooster, which opens in the Chinese zodiac's year of the rooster, is meant to relate to the idea that a rooster is "bossy" and that you get be the "boss" by building your own custom bowl.

Diners will have the opportunity to choose from single or unlimited bowl options at both lunch and dinner.  Weekday lunch single bowls will be priced at $8.99 with another $1.99 permittng you unlimited bowls.  Dinner and weekend diners will be able to choose from single bowls priced at $12.99 or unlimited bowls for an additional $1.99.

The 4,100 square foot restaurant has been nearly completely rebuilt from the ground up with new plumbing, bathrooms and equipment among the upgrades to the building itself.

Although not reinventing the wheel, Blum did take the opportunity to enhance the menu offerings and protein quality of the food offered. One Rooster will feature organic, all natural proteins such as shaved chicken and shaved ribeye  as well as bacon and SPAM.

One Rooster will provide seating for 185, inclusive of an outdoor, climate-controlled patio.

Furthering their efforts to offer healthier choices, all grilling at One Rooster will be done with sunflower oil and all sauces will be housemade.   The restaurant will also offer  assorted housemade dumplings and a tiki bar which Blum described as a "craft Trader Vic's."

While the restaurant is slated to open on the 15th, its liquor license is still in the works, but is expected to be in place by early-to-mid March. Additionally, the restaurant plans to offer delivery in the future, but not immediately.

Down the road, Blum plans to introduce a smaller version, "Flying Rooster," which will essentially be a scaled down One Rooster, for college campuses, airports and other high traffic destinations.

Are you excited for the return of a stir-fry concept to the Westside?  What are you thoughts on the enhancements made to the restaurant's menu?  Where would you like to see "Flying Rooster" open?

EXCLUSIVE: Macy's Backstage to Make Atlanta Debut This Spring

A backstage store within a full-line Macy's department store
Macy's is bringing their "backstage" concept to metro Atlanta.

Macy's backstage, the new-ish outlet division of Macy's department store, will be opening three new stores in metro Atlanta in the coming months.  The stores will occupy existing space within current Macy's at Cumberland Mall near Smyrna, Town Center at Cobb in Kennesaw and Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth.

Macy's piloted the "backstage" concept with four stores in New York in late 2015.  Since then, the brand has been expanded to 22 units in seven states. In 19 of those stores, backstage stores are housed within existing full-line Macy's stores.

Backstage is essentially Macy's attempt to attract T.J. Maxx and Marshalls shoppers in an attempt to convert them to Macy's shoppers.  In other words, entice the consumer with a deeply discounted widgit and hopefully have them pair that with some full price boots or some high margin makeup, or really anything.  Macy's has been struggling for years with retailers like T.J. Maxx and nordstrom rack, the outlet division of Nordstrom, taking market share.

Macy's trying to replicate the  Marshalls / T.J. Maxx POP area with impulse items

TJX Companies (which includes T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and online retailer Sierra Trading Post) has a market capitalization of $49.2 billion.  Macy's (which includes Macy's, Macy's backstage, Bloomingdale's, Bloomingdale's The Outlet Store and Bluemercury, a cosmetics company, today has a market capitalization of just $10 billion.

Launched in 2010, there are currently 17 Bloomingdale's The Outlet Stores open throughout ten states, but none in Georgia.

In metro Atlanta, the backstage stores at Cumberland and Town Center Malls will reportedly occupy space in the full-line store's lower level, while the concept will be situated on the upper floor in Gwinnett Place Mall.  Not surprisingly, in each market in which the new backstage stores will open locally, there are both Marshalls and TJ Maxx stores within close proximity.

Backstage stores stock a variety of men’s, women’s and kids’ apparel as well as assorted home furnishings and housewares.

Macy's merchandise being cleared to make way for the new backstage store
Sources say that existing merchandise is being redistributed within the store to make room for the new backstage stores.  The backstage stores, which will be operated as essentially a "shop in shop," will measure about 20,000 to 30,000 square feet.    Construction is slated to begin next week at all three locations with the company planning to have the backstage stores open by late April or early May.

While situated within the Macy's, backstage stores will reportedly have their own employees, their own return policy, and merchandise completely different than the full-line Macy's store.  Merchandise purchased in backstage must be returned to backstage and while the Macy's charge card is an accepted method of payment and Plenti points can be earned, traditional Macy's coupons will reportedly not be accepted at backstage.

Backstage stores will reportedly be stocked with merchandise from different vendors than the full line store and will have a completely different separate buying team.

"LAST ACT," the current name for the clearance area within Macy's stores, will reportedly not change as a result of the backstage openings.  According to multiple employees with whom I spoke at both the upcoming Atlanta area stores and at existing locations, Last Act departments are expected to remain in the full-line stores, furthering the company's notion that the merchandise in the backstage stores is "completely different" than what one can find in the full-line store.

The LAST ACT clearance area at the Cumberland Mall Macy's store
The approximately two month renovation process suggests that the company will significantly alter the appearance of the spaces they are turning over to the backstage concept.  Given the expense of this operation, many in Duluth should be pleased given this seems to suggest the company is doubling down on Gwinnett Place with no intention to shutter the store any time soon.

In addition, I'm told other local Macy's "may" receive backstage stores in the future.

As a company, Macy's is at a bit of a crossroads.  Last month Macy's confirmed it had or will soon close 68 full-line stores.  The retail giant also said it would be cutting "layers of management'' at its central operations, and paring down the number of managers at individual stores, leading to a loss of roughly 6,200 more jobs.  "We continue to experience declining traffic in our stores where the majority of our business is still transacted,'' Terry Lundgren, Macy's CEO said in a statement at the time of the announcement.  Lundgren, who has been at the company's helm since 2003, will step down as CEO in the coming months.  Jeff Gennette, 55, who was elected president of Macy's in 2014, will assume the CEO position during the first quarter.  Lundgren, 64, is expected to continue as executive chairman and work alongside Gennette for an undetermined amount of time.

This was the plan.

Late last week came word that Hudson's Bay Company, the Toronto-based retail conglomerate, was involved in "early stage discussions" to acquire Macy's.  Neither company has officially responded to the report but it is an intriguing idea.   Hudson's Bay already owns Saks Fifth Avenue (and the popular OFF FIFTH outlet division) and Lord & Taylor, among others, but purchasing Macy's would likely be their largest acquisition to date.

Industry observers, myself included, believe this could either go really well or terribly wrong for Hudson's Bay.  Hudson's would likely need to finance its Macy's acquisition by borrowing against its real estate holdings, or by bringing in a partner.  The purchase of Macy's and its vast real estate holdings could be a huge win, but if it does not go according to plan, it could topple both companies in the process.  With great risk comes great reward but we'll time will tell if this marriage of retailers is meant to be.

Macy's is due to report fourth quarter sales and earnings on February 21st.

Are you excited for "Macy's backstage" to be coming to metro Atlanta?  Do you think the "backstage" concept will help or hurt the Macy's brand overall?  Do you think Hudson's Bay is being smart or stupid their would-be pursuit of Macy's?

New look debuts in Kennesaw

Tampa-based Burger 21 officially opened their newest location that also sports the concept's newest design elements yesterday in Kennesaw.  The "better burger" restaurant, located in Fuqua Development's Kennesaw Marketplace, is about 3,000 square feet and is the fourth in Georgia for the growing chain.

Burger 21, like many "better burger" restaurants, features a variety of burgers.  Burger 21 features 20 burgers on its menu all the time with one, its "featured burger," rotating month to month.  This month's "featured burger" is the Steakhouse Burger: "We’re taking a classic steakhouse dinner and turning it into a hand-held creation. Our beef patty is topped with creamy blue cheese crumbles, velvety sautéed spinach, crispy parsnip chips and our house-made steakhouse ketchup."

Milkshakes also rotate with the featured flavor this month being a decadent Red Velvet shake.

The Kennesaw restaurant showcases the brand's latest offerings and design elements including two Coca-Cola Freestyle machines, meant to improve efficiency, and a pair of communal dining tables.

The restaurant also features a sink away from the restrooms meant for handwashing, as well as different wall art and flooring than many existing locations.

Corley & Meg Steward are the primary franchisees of the Alpharetta and Buford locations and partnered with entrepreneur David Brown to open the Kennesaw restaurant. The trio has reportedly reached an agreement with corporate to reopen the Burger 21 on Scenic Highway in Snellville.  The restaurant, which opened last June, "temporarily closed"this past August, apparently as a result of a "franchise compliance issue." Brown told me the restaurant will be slightly renovated to incorporate some of the new design elements and should be back up and running by April or May.

A Burger 21 in Buckhead is currently for sale as a "keep or convert."

What is your favorite "better burger" joint in Atlanta?  With Culver's and Burger 21 now open in Kennesaw Marketplace and a renovated Wendy's across the street and countless other options up and down both Cobb Parkway and Barrett Parkway, who offers the best burger in Kennesaw?  Are you over burgers and are instead just waiting for the Whole Foods Market to open?

The interior of the new Abercrombie & Fitch at Lenox should look like this
Despite my mention of it in one of last month's Bits & Bits, a number of readers contacted me with news that Abercrombie & Fitch has closed its store at Lenox Square.  Yes, the store has closed, but no, it is not permanent. The store will be one of only seven Abercrombie stores nationwide to undergo an extensive remodel that will introduce the latest evolution of the once trendy retailer.  The first of the new stores is scheduled to debut February 17th at Polaris Fashion Mall in Abercrombie's home market of Columbus, Ohio.  The new store design was about a year in the making and is described as "warm, inviting, open and inclusive" (kinda like America once was.) “This store is so different from what we delivered in the past. It’s really a complete overhaul,” Stacia Andersen, brand president of Abercrombie & Fitch and Abercrombie Kids, said in an exclusive interview with Women's Wear Daily (WWD).  Most important for many older customers, or parents of younger customers, or really anyone who cares about their ears, "the music has been toned down."  About $2 million will be spent to renovate the store with it slated to reopen later this summer. Last year Abercrombie spent upwards of $330,000 to renovate their Hollister store at Lenox Square.

A new Chicken Salad Chick is planned for the new North Lake Square shopping center on Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville.  The new restaurant joins Chipotle Mexican Grill, Pollo Tropical and anchors Academy Sports + Outdoors, Burlington, HomeGoods and Hobby Lobby in the center.

The Boxer Property office park at 2295 Parklake Drive in unincorporated DeKalb County was recently annexed into the City of Tucker.

Following the recent closure of the SuperTarget (and soon Rack Room Shoes) on Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell, one ToNeTo Atlanta reader indicates  IKEA may be in talks to take over the property for a new store.  The popular Swedish home-furnishings retailer opened their Atlanta store at Atlantic Station in 2005, but has been adding additional stores in the southeast in recent years.  While a second store in Georgia might do well, I'm concerned about whether the Roswell site is large enough or in the right location for an IKEA.

A building permit filed with the City of Atlanta indicates that Amazon intends to open a second "pop-up" kiosk in metro Atlanta.  With one kiosk already open at North Point Mall, the second store, which the permit indicates would be roughly 300 square feet, would open at Lenox Square in Buckhead.  The store will likely sell Amazon branded products like the Fire, Echo and Kindle.

Indianapolis based hhgregg, a retailer of consumer electronics and home appliances, is at risk of being de-listed by the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).  The company, which trades under the ticker HGG, has seen its stock price plummet in recent months, today hovering around 40 cents or so.  After hitting $20.11 on September 20th, 2013, the stock has never returned to that point and has been on a downward spiral since.  In order to be in compliance with NYSE rules and regulations, the stock must return to a per share price in excess of $1 and have its market capitalization, currently at just over $10 million, be above $50 million. The company reportedly intends to submit a plan to the NYSE within the next 45 days outlining the actions the company will take to comply.   The retailer recently reported disappointing sales for the fiscal third quarter, which ended Dec. 31, of $453 million, down nearly 24 percent from the same quarter a year earlier.  As a result, the company announced a restructuring plan that will eliminate 100 jobs, including 70 at its Indianapolis headquarters.  The plan is expected to save the company $15 million annually.  No store closings were announced as part of the restructuring. Currently, the company operates 220 stores in 19 states.   Hhgregg operates a dozen stores in the greater metro Atlanta area including locations in Buckhead, Smyrna and Alpharetta.

Atlanta's newest Bonefish Grill opened this past Monday at Akers Mill Square on Cobb Parkway.  The newly built restaurant, part of Tampa-based Bloomin' Brands, is open for lunch and dinner, and Sunday brunch.   Bonefish will soon be joined by Chuy's, a Tex-Mex eatery, expected to open in the coming weeks in a portion of the former Circuit City and a rebuilt Chick-fil-A, with inside seating, expected to open in May.

Aldi will officially open two new stores in metro Atlanta tomorrow.  The new grocery stores are located in Northlake Square in Tucker and Peachtree Corners Marketplace in Peachtree Corners.  Each store is about 18,000 square feet and will debut the chain's newest design elements.  Local residents are invited to take part in Grand Opening events at both locations which will include  product samples and the opportunity to win gift cards and free produce for a year.

Well placed sources now confirm that Fifth Group's Ecco restaurant, planned for Phipps Plaza near the AC Hotel, has been delayed.  Once planned to debut this summer, but later pushed to the fall, it is now targeting a "2018" opening.  Fifth Group reportedly had to "regroup" after identifying substantial work that needs to be done to prep the hole in which their multi-level restaurant will be built.

Kennesaw will get a second Del Taco restaurant later this spring when a new location opens at Kennesaw Marketplace. The quick-serve Mexican chain already has a location at Madison Place at Chastain on Chastain Road but will be targeting the Town Center and Cobb Parkway market with their new location.

Whole Foods Market Sets Expiration Date for Georgia Store

Natural foods store to shutter later this month

Whole Foods Marketconfirmed earlier today it plans to close its Augusta area location on February 22nd.  The 41,000 square foot store opened September 2014 in "Washington Crossing" on Washington Road.   The center was purchased by Fairburn-based S.J. Collins Enterprises in September 2013 and heavily renovated to accommodate the Whole Foods and other new tenants.

The Augusta Chronicle ran a story in June 2014 highlighting the improvementsat Washington Crossing with excerpts from an interview with Jeff Garrison, a partner at S.J. Collins. Garrison stated, "The former Georgia State Floral Distributors space has been expanded to accommodate a 41,000-square-foot Whole Foods, which needed a larger store because of strong sales projections."

Apparently those "strong sales" failed to materialize.

Earlier this morning, a spokesperson from the Whole Foods Market corporate office in Austin, Texas released the following statement:

“As we work to position Whole Foods Market for long-term success, we have carefully evaluated our portfolio of stores to align with a more thoughtful growth strategy. As a result, we have decided to close the Augusta store. This was not a decision that was made lightly and we are working closely with all affected team members to find alternative positions at nearby stores where possible.”

The closure of Whole Foods will be the first of two grocery closures planned for Augusta.  Late last month, Kroger announced it would close its store on 15th Street February 28th.  “The store has experienced declining sales and negative profit over an extended period of time,” said Glynn Jenkins, spokesman for Kroger’s Atlanta division, which includes Augusta.  The 35-year-old store, which anchors Central Square shopping center, had reportedly been struggling for years and had most recently been on a "short-term lease."

Earth Fare, an Asheville, North Carolina-based natural foods grocer, which has reportedly struggled in metro Atlanta, operates a store about three miles from the Whole Foods in Augusta that will surely hope to capture some market share when their competitor closes.

Amazingly, despite these closures that both site sluggish sales, Augusta is the second largest city in Georgia with a population of about 200,000.

Earlier this evening, Whole Foods Market released some disappointing earnings that included a 2.4% decline in same-store sales, their sixth straight decline. The grocer also indicated they anticipate seeing same-store sales down as much as 2.5% this fiscal year. The grocer did however indicate that Q1 sales should climb 3% to $4.98 billion. In response to the sales report, Whole Foods announced it plans to close nine locations in the current quarter, something it hasn't done since 2008, during the great recession. However, Whole Foods will still open six locations, including those planned for Chamblee and Kennesaw.

Whole Foods is expected to debut a larger store on Ponce de Leon Avenue with a full service restaurant later this spring.  The existing store in Midtown Place shopping center took over a portion of its neighboring Staples store and will swell to about 50,000 square feet. Additionally, the new Kennesaw Whole Foods is meant to serve as a replacement to the existing Harry's Farmers Market (owned by Whole Foods Market) on Powers Ferry Road in Marietta, which is slated to close when the Kennesaw location opens.

Last month, Whole Foods announced it would shut down its metro Atlanta food preparation facility by February 12th. The company is also closing regional kitchen facilities in Everett, MA and Landover, MD, shifting to outside suppliers for some of its in-store prepared foods.

S.J. Collins, which almost exclusively develops Whole Foods anchored projects according to its website, also developed the Whole Foods Market in Savannah, which opened in August 2013.

As first reported on this site, S.J. is also developing a new Whole Foods Market in Chamblee and a new 365 by Whole Foods Market  in Decatur, which is expected to be the first in the state. In addition to S.J. projects, there are also new Whole Foods Market stores coming soon to Kennesaw and Midtown and another 365 by Whole Foods Marketplanned for Buckhead

Are you surprised that Whole Foods is closing its Augusta location? Which Atlanta area Whole Foods store are you most excited about?  Do you think Whole Foods will bounce back from its recent struggles or are there too many grocers offering natural foods for the retailer to compete in what has become an overly crowded space?
